I've been accused of being a tree-hugger (I am), and I talk to the plants and to myself when I'm out roaming your yard, putting the pieces together. My approach takes a combination of listening, knowing what will likely succeed in the conditions you have, and responding to both to put together the ideal landscape that is yours alone. I start with a plan that you participate in creating (with your requests and feedback) and then make adjustments and improvements as the landscape installation progresses. What's on paper never completely translates to real conditions so having the designer involved from beginning to end is the way to keep the design integrity intact. I prefer to work with anything on the site that has merit, such as a fully grown rhododendron that would look smashing in another location. Occasional transplanting saves a project from looking brand new and honors what's good about the existing landscape. I don't save every tree I meet but I certainly consider its value in the environment as a whole before I seal its doom. Further, I think about the larger picture when I'm finessing the smaller picture. My careful analysis insures that your landscape will be like no other - uniquely yours. The more we like our personal landscapes, the better care and attention they receive. And, I do believe that the happier we are in our personal spaces, the better we are as people.
