## Community Q&A

**Q: Looking for recommendations for stainless steel sink for kitchen.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I know the Franke, Rohl, Kolher, Blanco, etc, but was wondering if there is a less known brand with great reputation that is not as expensive ( biggest fear is rusting so I'm afraid of the less expensive sinks fearing I will have a problem)? Looking for 32" sink, 16 or 18 gauge, 304 stainless, 18/10 or 18/8 with 8-15mm radius corners. Any experience you have with other brands would be appreciated. Thank you.

A: We use Revere sinks by Daltile quite a bit. Haven't had any issues with them and they offer 16g for a lot of their sinks.

**Q: Quartz backsplash to match counters - not slabs** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I am considering quartz counters and thinking about the backsplash as well. I read so many comments on Houzz talking about quartz choices and what to coordinate as a backsplash choice. Sometimes people are using slabs of the same material for backsplash (which works well in some kitchens depending on style) and some people are using real marble or other natural stone choices. But sometimes I read warnings about matching real stone right next to Quartz because the quartz pales in comparison to the real thing.
But I'm wondering if anyone has tried cutting quartz into tile sizes to apply to the backsplash. For that matter, I'm wondering if any of the quartz companies offer their product in popular tile shapes and sizes. I've had a look at a few and I haven't seen anything like that offered.
I just think it would make so much sense for those companies to offer that option but there might be a good reason why they don't (price, practicality?)
Right now my top choice would be Eternal Calacatta Gold from Silestone and if they offered the same product in a small herringbone pattern I'd snatch it up so quickly.
Anyone have any experience with using smaller pieces as tile? Or reasons why you think it might not be a good idea?
Quartz manufacturers, are you listening? Maybe a whole new product line to offer by having a few popular tile size shapes of your product. Subway, herringbone, arabesque?? I could also envision people choosing it in their shower and bath surrounds.

Silestone Eternal Calacatta Gold

Looking for backsplash that looks like this....but out of quartz material

A: There are unlimited options! One company, MSI, has several different options. I am leaving a link of just one of the colors you could get. Explore and find the one you like!

**Q: white quartz countertops....turmeric staining.** *(in Building a Home)*

Hello everyone. Ready for some sage advice and tips right about now. Nearing the end of our new build (ha, right!) and at the point of choosing countertops. Kitchen is in, appliances coming in soon, trim is being put up, etc. My designer and I, when we had been choosing tile for the bathrooms had fallen in love with a countertop they had at Ciot, and had decided to go with that countertop material almost six months ago. We planned everything around it, the colors of the cabinets, the look and flow of the kitchen, etc. Well this week the fabricator that’s doing our counters came out and we showed him the counters we had planned on, he took his keys out, and scratched up that counter material pretty quick. Advised strongly against it, and mentioned others who had problems with it. Which of course is great to know before spending the $$ on it, but not exactly great cuz most things were planned around it.

So now we are back to square one of choosing counters. Went to several suppliers in the last three days, picked up plenty of samples of quartz that went well with the white of the cabinets and look of the room. My ethnicity is Indian, and I use a lot of turmeric in my food. So I decided to do a turmeric test not just cuz it’s a highly staining spice, but because I use it practically every other day so it’s a reality of what goes on in my kitchen. Stained all my final quartz samples/contenders, left it for five minutes, and it came off only with an SOS hard sponge thing. Left it on again for about thirty minutes and I’m not able to get the stains off. Tried the SOS sponge, tried Magic Marker, tried an Oxy Clean paste. There’s still a faint yellow color.

So now...is there seriously any white quartz countertop that can hold up to a turmeric stain? This is going to affect my entire kitchen design!!!

I’ve read several other threads on this...and it seems that Silestone white might be a quartz that can handle turmeric stains? Any other choices/advice of what has worked for people?

A: We did some stain testing and used tumeric as one of our stains. It took a few times to scrub with a magic eraser and soap and water, but it did end up coming out. I would not recommend using those harsh scrubbers on your quartz. Though it probably won't scratch, it will remove the sheen. Once that is gone, you can't really get it back so try to be super careful. We used several different brands of quartz and they all performed the same.

**Q: My Kitchen Island is AWFUL! Help Please** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm in the process of updating my kitchen, but am at a total loss for what I can do about my kitchen Island. It is a really odd shape, holds the sink and dishwasher, but that's it. I'm at a total loss, help please!

The island is in the left by the three weird chairs.

A: I would leave room for seating with an overhang for the peninsula or island. Just from the photos, you don't really have a lot of room for a big dining table without making it awkward to walk around. In my dream world of unlimited funds, I would actually blow that wall out and make it truly open concept.

**Q: Countertop assistance please!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Cabinets are in and now I can't decide for countertops/backsplash!!! PLUS what do I do at the top of the cabinets?

A: I love the Cambria Brittannica!! You might get the same look using Vicostone Arabescato and save a few dollars while doing it! A full height back splash will give you a WOW factor, for sure!!

**Q: Is Cambria worth it?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Is Cambria worth of investment? Or other brands like Ceaserstone, Silestone or Hanstone are just fine?

Has anyone gotten Cambria through Costco?

A: @newproject858 Try Vicostone Arabescato.
