## Community Q&A

**Q: Can i wash China Tea Cups in my dishwasher?** *(in Cleaning Tips)*

Since my home renovation i have a dishwasher for the first time. Can i wash my china tea cups in it? I collect them and some need to be washed.

A: Even though some dishwashers have a light wash setting, sometimes it's best to just be safe and hand wash. I have heard unfortunate events about irreplaceable china that had been destroyed even under the most delicate of cycles.

**Q: Cleaning Hardwood floors?** *(in Cleaning Tips)*

We just renovated our house and had our hardwood floors refinished and had plycrylic clear satin put on them. What can i use to clean them? The old surface didn't have this so water would damage it. 1 friend said a vinegar and water solution. What about swiffer wet or will this damage the surface? Im going to make people take off their shoes when they come in from now on. will have slippers for them. Where can you recommend i get inexpensive slippers?

A: I have used a swiffer on mine, but i try to do it minimally. I don't really see a huge difference now between my swiffer and the expensive stuff. (Besides a higher shine)
For some cheap slippers may i recommend Kewaii Clothing Stores? I don't know if there's one in your area but they do have a selection online:

**Q: Pro Painters too expensive, what to do?** *(in Paint)*

Hello-
We are scheduled to close on a foreclosed home on May 1st and must be out of our current home by June 5. We wanted the interior painted before we move in, it isn't Horrible, but everything needs paint, maybe not the ceiling or inside of closets. The house is 3700 sf and has beadboard wainscoting in 4 rooms. The downstairs trim is stained wood that would need to be refinished and I prefer paint, so we're painting it. The quote we got back was $44,000. I very much value quality work, but cannot begin to afford this. I had 15-20,000 in mind as a budget and thought that was going to be plenty. Clearly, I need to compromise something. Right now I see my options as

1\. Paint the whole thing myself over time and around my 3 young kids and my job (and my husband's job and a half). Save that budget for more moving and childcare help. Won't be done before we move in, or probably until Christmas or later. Also makes me want to cry.
2\. Pay for them to paint all the trim (24,500). Also makes me want to cry but less... can probably accomplish the wall painting over the summer? No money for more help on other tasks.
3\. Pay for them to paint the stained trim. Probably leaves us with a little money for more help but also won't be able to finish until maybe Halloween. Includes 20 windows which are my painting nemesis.
Is there a better option that I'm missing? Which of those options would you choose and why?

A: Oh my goodness.. that is extremely high priced.. I have hired a certified contractor looking for work in the classifieds to paint my home and it ended up looking fantastic. 2800 sq ft and it was only $800.

**Q: Oils** *(in Cooking)*

I use EVOO for most everything, except when I need a lighter vegetable oil for a few things. Neutral things. I tend to buy whatever, Crisco oil, 'vegetable' oil, canola, corn. I do not need to buy one of each, since I don't use that much. So what's your choice for an all-purpose neutral oil? Thanks!

A: Coconut oil all the way! Healthy option. I have noticed a really big difference in my health since i have added coconut to my diet.

**Q: Which paint formula for bathroom?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi All,
I want to finish painting my master bath which has been partially painted for way too long now. I started with RH silver sage in the subtle velvet formula, but I don't think that formula works well in the bathroom. I'm not worried about mold so much, just drip marks down the wall. Despite turning on the fan the bathroom still gets foggy and then I get condensation and drip marks.
There's the aura matte bathroom paint, anyone try that? I don't know that I actually want matte, I've grown to love eggshell. But I'll deal with whatever sheen will handle periodic condensation.

A: A higher sheen will be easy to clean, and will last longer. I love the look of matte.. it's gorgeous but if you have flaws on the wall they will stand out without any sheen.

**Q: Pine sap is ruining my beautiful Sandstone patio. Can you help?** *(in Cleaning Tips)*

I recently had 3 enormous pine trees thinned but since then they have been dripping sap all over a very large garden patio - and it is impossible to remove. But is it? I am looking for any products that actually work. It is also over some all weather material furniture - which looks awful too. I tried acetone on the furniture/patio but it didn't work.
HELP!

A: A good method would be to use a blade scraper and boil some water and immediately scrape it off after pouring the hot water on the sap. The only downside to this method is the paint will come up with the sap as well.
