We started at soapstone, switched to granite and returned to soapstone. We are back to our original fear of too much green in the soapstone. What I’m finding in our area are a couple choices. One is from Brazil and the other from India. The Brazilian slab is medium gray now with lots of subtle veining, some of it has light green in it. I don’t mind it now… The slab from India is already very dark with white veining. We put water on both and they both show some subtle green tints in the background colors. Will that green become more pronounced? Which Stone will look more green later as it ages?? Which Stone, the grey or the black will look best with natural quartersawn oak cabinetry and hickory floors, stainless appliances? I’m not a matchy person. I love a homey, eclectic, farmhouse look. A: I guess that not soapstone... you should try gluing and polishing to check if it offers the right results. Thanks for this thread though, so educative. **Q: radon mitigation… is it correct?** *(in The Old House)* I recently bought a home from an estate seller that had completed radon mitigation for a previous buyer (the deal fell through). By the time I bought, the radon level had dropped from a tested 16 to a metered 1.9. So all is well. Except the installer left the work site littered with junk, destroyed shrubs, and — weirdly — an abandoned hole saw. Also abandoned was a long PVC pipe discarded on the ground. I’m asking whether, from the pictures, the installation looks correct? Is the pipe left on the ground just leftover trash? Should the top of the installed pipe be hooded? The radon levels are under control now, but thanks in advance for any thoughts. A: That pipe looks like "trush". But you still need to do a lot of improvements to it. Things need to look better. **Q: How would you handle this situation?** *(in Home Repair)* Hello! We have hired someone to install hardwood floors on the 2nd level of our house built in 1952. In the middle of the installation I noticed the damage on the ceiling on the lower level of our house caused by the nails going through the walls and let the contractor know. The contractor promised to fix it when they are done with the floors but never really do anything else about this and continued with the installation as is causing more damage in the living room and kitchen area. At the end she said that there is something wrong with our house and walls are not thick enough for the nails and she doesn't have to fix it but as a courtesy offered to fix it but only if we split the cost with her. What should we do in this case? A: I still don't understand how are flooring nails go through to a ceiling. This may mean the contractor may have used the wrong size of nails or there is a massive variance with the thickness.
