More options: You can also use tall cabinets with openings; the openings can be used as bedside tables. Consider installing sconce lighting on the wall above the bed as a space-saving alternative to traditional bedside lamps.

Stretch it to the ceiling. You might well need to use every spare inch, nook and cranny when it comes to squeezing in storage in a spatially challenged spare room. And that means stretching cupboards right up to the ceiling. These quirky wardrobes on stilts are stacked squarely on top of two bedside tables to create room for clothes, shoes, books and other bits and pieces. If your space has no bedside surface to speak of, as here, opt for wall-mounted lamps that guests can control from the comfort of the bed without moving an inch.
Victoria Harrison added this to How to Fit a Bedside Shelf Into Even the Tiniest Room
Carve a space from cabinetry. What do you do when you have built-ins on both sides of your bed? You could carve out an ingenious bedside table by effectively “slicing” into the cabinetry, as the owners of this Wee House have done. By stacking an upper cabinet on top of a lower one and leaving a slim space in between, the owners have claimed a generous shelf on each side of the bed.Take a look around the rest of this Wee House

6. Nightstand-closet combo. These custom cabinets provide a place to hang clothes and a surface for bedside essentials. Since they’re tall and slim, they don’t take up much floor space.
