Beautiful Kitchen. - The light fixtures I have chosen are similar, but I’m worried they’re going to be too large. My island is 9 feet long and ceiling is wired for 3 pendants. Which are 25.5 W. My ceiling is very high. It’s slanted. Not sure the actual height over island but slants to 16 feet. And thoughts or advice. Thx!

Hi Ginger, I’m traveling for the next few days so I don’t have the cabinet dimensions handy, but I’ll get them for you when I return home. I can definitely still design your kitchen for you even though you’re in Scottsdale, we just wouldn’t be able to do the construction part of the project. I produce design packets for out of town clients with all of the drawings and materials selections on spreadsheets. Let me know if you are interested. I’d be glad to work with you! Thanks so much again for your kind words!

Stunning - best on Houzz! - I have looked at thousands of kitchens over the last few weeks looking for that one kitchen that I can use for inspiration as we start our remodel. I see bits and pieces here and there but until this kitchen, not one said "PICK ME"! every detail, scale, materials, color, etc. are perfection. we are doing a shore house, so we'll "beach" it up, but I was struggling with every beach house pic being all white or aqua. Going for an "old world" ship wreck with a modern twist look...try and explain that!? Elegant, yet casual/whimiscal. This kitchen gives me a great starting point! So - no questions, just kudos and thank you. Many blessings to the family who will gets to enjoy this wonderul space!

Love the "Tuxedo" Design Especially love the details, windows, use of different hardware and complimentary lighting. The flooring selection is perfect! Traditional takes on contemporary. Simply gorgeous! Hard to tell, what color walls are in this kitchen - very complimentary but allows the white cabinetry to shine.

Large triangle - We are planning a new construction West Indies style home and this kitchen is my inspiration. I love everything about it! Our kitchen dimensions are similar in length ( sink wall), but narrower in width. We can make it work with a smaller island. My concern is the distance from the refrigerator to the range. Is it practical for the working triangle to cover so much distance?

Hi Kathy,

Thanks so much for your compliments and question. Yes, this kitchen does have a larger work triangle. This was a remodel project and we repainted and reused the tall refrigerator cabinet and the existing base cabinets, so the work triangle layout was already pre-determined for us on this particular project. It just wasn't practical to rip everything out and start from zero when the base and refrigerator cabinets were already so well made, so we made them work for us. The kitchen island, upper cabinets and hood are all new, which we custom designed and made. As far as the work triangle goes, the homeowners love this kitchen and say that it works well for them, especially with the extra veggie sink that we added in the kitchen island. Since most people use the sink and the range more than they go back and forth to the refrigerator, I'd say that keeping those two things close to one another is most important. NKBA guidelines say that the kitchen work triangle should not exceed 26 feet total when all three sides are added together, and that each side should be between 4 and 9 feet long. However, that is not always practical, especially in a kitchen this large. The bottom line is that you have to do what works best for your family within the space that you have to work with. I think if your kitchen is a little smaller than this one, you'll be fine, especially if you can work a prep sink into the island. You'd just need to get all of your ingredients out of the fridge when you first start cooking and bring them to your work area at the range and prep sink and you're good to go. A pot filler above the range would also help in a large kitchen to cut down on trips to the sink. In addition, we put a spice and utensil pullout right next to the range to keep those important elements handy when cooking. I hope this helps and best of luck with your project!

Light fixture spacing. - I absolutely LOVE this kitchen. Your attention to detail is inspiring! You have been so kind about answering questions. Your expertise is much appreciated! We are in the midst of new construction and have a kitchen island that is 10' x 5'. Half of the width is sink/work space. The other half is counter height seating. I have selected three Crystorama 9011 Masefield pendants. They are 9" wide by 24.5" high. Our ceilings are 10'. I was going to leave about 23" between each fixture and the ends of the counter. Do you think I need to add a forth fixture, or is this adequate? We have quite a bit of recessed lighting in the kitchen but I don't want the lighting for the large island to look too sparse - or too cramped. How would you space these fixtures (side to side and front to back) and how many would you use? Thanks!!!

Hi, thanks so much for your kind words. Are you hanging the pendants all the way across the 10' span? I was unclear on that part. If so, I would recommend three of the larger size pendants in the same Crystorama series. They are 19" wide each. Our fixtures in the photo above are a similar width and our island is 7.5 feet wide. If your island is 2.5 feet longer, I would recommend three large 19" wide pendants. I hope this helps and best of luck with your remodel!

Hi and thanks for your compliments and question. Hudson Valley Lighting has a lot of similar coordinating fixtures (the one in the photo is their Glendale pendant). I would try their website. You can also try Arteriors and Currey and Company, who also make great transitional light fixtures. All of these can be ordered either online, through a local interior designer, or through a lighting store in your area. I hope this helps and best of luck with your project!

Hi pbodeen, The distance between the top of the cooktop and the bottom of the hood is somewhere between 34" and 36". This works well for a tall person. The husband in this house is 6'3" and he doesn't hit his head on it. One thing to keep in mind is that the manufacturer for the range and hood insert will give you recommended measurements for their particular model. If you get too high above the range, it won't suck out the fumes properly. Hopefully, this information will help you! Best of luck with your project!

Gwendolyn Purdom added this to Working the Room: What’s Popular in Kitchens Now
Trend No. 7: Let There Be LightWhat the pros say. Owen says good lighting is the second-biggest kitchen priority he hears from clients behind opening up a kitchen space into a living area. To get it, he might add a picture window above a sink or score more natural light by knocking down a dividing wall. Statement pendants, like the ones shown here, are also popular, as are sconces, which can come in handy in illuminating an open shelf. What saved Houzz photos say. Dramatic pendant lights and chandeliers, many with gold details, are a repeat sight in the recent most-saved kitchen photos. Getting the low-key look.
