Home bar - eclectic home bar idea in Austin with granite countertops, light wood cabinets, multicolored backsplash and mosaic tile backsplash

Cool House Tour 2008

Both of these houses were on the Cool House Tour of 2008. They were newly constructed homes, designed to fit into their spot in the neighborhood and to optimize energy efficiency. They have a bit of a contemporary edge to them while maintaining a certain warmth and "homey-ness". Project Design by Mark Lind Project Management by Jay Gammell Phtography by Greg Hursley in 2008

Were the corks applied directly to the wall or was something put over the wall before applying?

A piece of quarter inch luan plywood with a glued and stapled sheet of 1/16" cork. The cork to cork should give you the uniform bond your looking for and a background that looks good without having to add odds and ends.

What did you use for backing? And if you used a backing, what type and can I use just monkey glue? I was going to make a template of the space and then glue the corks to the template and then glue the template to the wall. Your thoughts?

Backing is not necessary if a good adhesive is used, although it may be helpful to paint the wall a similar color as the average cork to account for any gaps that might arise here or there. I'm not familiar with monkey glue, but in this case a regular construction grade silicone adhesive was used, I believe. I'm not sure a template is necessary to achieve the effect shown here; the stacking went organically row upon row directly up the wall surface, introducing small errors in the tessellation that brought about interesting irregularities.
