Writer's Hut

Architecture by Bosworth Hoedemaker
Interior Design by Garret Cord Werner

This secluded cabin is part of a larger compound created for a family's private retreat in the San Juan's. This client wanted her own private space where she could spend rainy afternoons surrounded by nature to work on her writing.

The thick nettles the property owner had to clear away from the wooded portion of the property inspired the name Nettly Wood. "The project is on a remote island that required all materials to be brought in by barge. The project team and owners flew in by seaplane or came over by private boat," Hoedemaker says.

The writer's hut is also nestled among the trees. Its form is simpler than the main cabin — gable versus hip roof — but the vocabulary of materials is similar.

10. Remote writer's hut. For those looking for solitude — whether to hone a creative practice or simply to meditate — a postage stamp-size cabin like this is all you need. Located within a larger property that also contains a main house and other outbuildings, this writer's hut is designed to provide an "away" place within range of a good home-cooked meal and company.See the rest of the property
