I've been warned against using marble for my island - kids/we live hard, etc & was just wondering your perspective. That marble is gorgeous. Also, which line of cabinetry was used? Lovely - thanks!

Most people are told not to use marble for their countertops but they continuously use it on floors. Floors take more abuse than countertops. The only disadvantage with marble, travertine and limestones versus granite is that they are not acid resistant which means if anything acidic makes contact with the stone it will leave an etch mark on the surface, which is not to be confused with staining. Staining can be prevented with sealer but not etch marks. Granite should also be sealed it is still a rock which means it can absorb liquids also! To reduce the visibility of etch marks on stones such as marble, you are better off using the marble in a matte finish. Remember, the more shiny or polished the marble is, the more you will notice etch marks! Besides, marble is supposed to have character, how is it that it has been used in Europe for thousands of years and no one ever complains about it? Wow, I really love this white marble island. I have seen marble counter tops before, but I have never seen anyone make a full island like this. I think this is really unique and it looks great. Thank you for sharing. http://www.marble4us.com/crema-marfil-marble.html

It is beautiful, however I would have suggested a mitered corner for the apron. Just FYI for those looking to do an apron top.

you can install them in the base, or underneath the overhang up high so it is not visible.. in some instances, it can be built-inside the drawer.. you can also camouflage the outlet device (https://www.wallplatesonline.com/collections/outlets/products/ap-1489-do)

They do look a bit more square. I'd try Sugatsune or Siro hardware.

I'm confused - Do you mean you're contemplating side walls that reach the ceiling, or just partial walls that the counter might extend over?

In either case, a single wall takes up roughly 4 more inches of width than a waterfall counter or simple end panel - that's 4 inches on either end that could be used for additional storage within the cabinetry...
...imagine having just 8 more inches of cabinet width to store cutting boards, spices, baking sheets, bottles of wine, etc. without using any additional floor space!

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Becky Harris added this to Furniture Favorites: Bar Stools
These sleek white stools blend right in with the white island.
Becky Harris added this to Modern Icons: The Cherner Chair
White barstools are sleek and very chic. Note that they do not overwhelm the kitchen island.
Debbie Snider added this to Carrara vs. Calacatta Marble: What Is the Difference?
Calacatta: The patterning on this one is predominately larger and thick.
KitchenLab | Rebekah Zaveloff Interiors added this to 5 Stunning Alternatives to the Tile Backsplash
Here they've mixed stainless and glass, which works great together.
KitchenLab | Rebekah Zaveloff Interiors added this to Kitchen Details: The Right Edge for Your Countertop
Square with a waterfall edge. Another way to make your stone countertops a focal point is to run them vertically down the edge of the island.
Beth Dotolo, ASID, RID, NCIDQ added this to Using White Marble: Hot Debate Over a Classic Beauty
3. How do you live? Are you the type of homeowner who picks up after yourself after each use in the kitchen? Or are you a busy on-the-go homeowner, where a kitchen counter wouldn't get wiped down until the next morning? Acid from substances such as red wine, marinara sauce, blueberries and even lemons can tarnish the look of the marble if left to sit overnight. Keep in mind, the marble will not stain instantly! This only pertains to when substances have been allowed to soak into the surface.
Scheer & Co. Interior Design added this to How to Pick the Perfect Bar Stool
Of course, there's always the option to keep them ultra-fresh by dipping them in paint, white or any other color, for that matter!
Cathy Lara added this to Get Stone and Ceramic Surfaces Super Clean
MarbleOne of the most popular kitchen counter materials on Houzz is marble (particularly Carrera marble), but as interior designer Anne DeCocco says, marble is not for everybody. "[Marble] is a softer stone than granite, and it scratches and stains easily because of its porous nature. ... But frankly, I like materials that age and show wear. If you don't, then you are not a candidate for marble counters." Marble surfaces take some care and sealing, making them a challenge in homes with kids; acidic stains from breakfast staples like coffee and orange juice will be difficult to clean if not blotted up as soon as the spill occurs. Blot the spill or stain with a soft cloth or sponge and use water to rinse away any remaining spilled liquid. Rinse the soft cloth or sponge with hot water and wring it out thoroughly to remove most of the excess water, which can also seep through the porous marble and cause a permanent stain. Wipe the surface dry with a chamois; don't allow it to air dry. For tough stains: For any marble stain, it's important to wipe the surface as soon as the spill happens. Ask your marble installer or home improvement specialist for a recommended marble poultice. Stay away from: Abrasive cleansers, vinegar and citrus cleansers.
