Hi Penelope - Thanks so much! Mainly these are grasses & grass-like plants. I wanted plants that could take the conditions (this creek is not always dry) and ones that would look appropriate in the setting. In the right and left foreground, there is Acorus gramineus 'Ogon'. Both sides, mid-photo, that is Sesleria autumnalis with a large mass of white Iris sibirica that is just about to bloom in the background on the left. Other plants in this space include Helleborus argutifolius, Corylopsis spicata, Polystichum munitum & a Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). In the distance, this planting needed to be very low maintenance & natural and is a mix of Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' (that the deer keep pruned to a low height), Lonicera pileata & our native Holodiscus discolor planted under a stand of Betula jacquemontii.

Hi Alitza - I use a variety of sizes to create a natural look. All of the smaller rock is rounded rock sometimes called river rock or bull rock. Sizing is typically a combination of 6-12", 2-6" and some pea gravel on top. The larger boulders range from 1-man to 6-man sizes.
