@drshull - this is how it turns out in photos. You need a flash which drastically alters how paint colours on any surface appear. It's also why you can't base your colour selection on what the designer used and expect it to look the same in your house. Lighting, direction of the windows etc all play a part in achieving a colour. You're always best to find a paint that looks how you see a photo than to try and get the same results by using the paint specified in the story. But colour experts like myself do know how to manipulate hues using sheen as I did for this project. Not something everyone can do with success and accuracy.

I had the walls done in the same colour as the built ins to specifically create a sense of volume and space in the room. Contrast makes rooms feel and look smaller so we avoided it as best we could. Myself, I think wainscotting would distract from the cabinetry so I wouldn't have done it. However, this is why people hire designers. Each space is different from the other and what works in one won't necessarily work in another. Our expertise and eye are worth the investment to get it done right the first time.

Thanks so much for
taking the time!! (btw I hear you are a genius - no joke - you have
an amazing reputation.) Yes, I did have a decorator come in from Lux Design (I
am in Montreal) unfortunately, she did not give me any ideas - see
attached photos - this is what I have now (ugly)

- I have however bought another couch
(cream color) and two comfy chairs for tv ( in a blue/charcoal color) -
There is an Aubusson carpet in the room (which I love..) I really think
the lead gray would be nice.. you??

It's a one of a kind but depending on the size you are after, there may be one similar. It's an investment piece though. A major one.

Me too. If the room's purpose is watching movies then where is the screen and how can everyone see it in a long narrow room? I have a narrow room and a movie buff to decorate for.

White doesn't always do that... in fact painting the trim and cabinets a dark colour such as this did way more for this room than white would have. The problem with white is that as soon as you put anything darker or a colour in the same room, it will contrast and therefore defines the space which can make it feel smaller. If you work with tonal variations, you can minimize the defining and push out a space - darker values do this better. Light is not always better!

There are cabinet lights, pot lights and a table lamp in this room. The artwork which is not visible on the far right side above the sectional also has a picture light above it. We wanted moody lighting for the evening it doesn't need to be bright.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Mitchell Parker added this to Design Dose: 3 Living Rooms That Caught Our Eye This Week
2. Bold and Brawny Designer: Meredith HeronLocation: TorontoSize: 10 feet by 16 feet (3 by 5 meters)Homeowners’ request: “The homeowners wanted a sophisticated space that was both suitable for entertaining but was pet friendly and not too precious. They wanted it to be a showstopper but didn’t want to have to worry about upkeep. It needed to have character but not look dated.”Plan of attack: “The room is very narrow and long, so we chose a rich indigo in a high-gloss lacquer for the millwork, which wraps around the space in an L. We then painted the remaining walls in the same color but in an eggshell finish. The lacquer and sheen brighten up the indigo by about 20 percent, so whenever I’m asked what the color is on the millwork, I always give the caveat that the paint chip — Benjamin Moore Lead Gray — looks nothing like the eventual color. “Painting the room out in the dark indigo reduces contrast in the space and makes the room feel double the size. It’s cozy and perfect for media watching. The best part of this entire room, though, was being able to display the heirloom library of books that were handed down from a favorite aunt. We didn’t have to buy any accessories for this room. We just shopped the house. It gives it such character and a true personalized touch.”Why it works: “The best part of this entire project was the fact that the clients gave us a lot of information about how they live and what the function of the space needed to be. They have two very large standard poodles who run the show, and then they left us alone to create.”What wasn’t working: “There had been an actual wood-burning fireplace, but it protruded rather far out into the room, and beside it was a poorly located radiator. This drastically reduced how and where the furniture could be laid out. Both clients are well over 6 feet tall, and with two dogs they could barely fit in the room, let alone entertain. “They are huge movie buffs and love to have viewing parties and Oscar parties, and this is where they wanted that to happen. We removed the old fireplace and closed it up. We replaced it with an electric fireplace. We also removed and relocated the old radiator and replaced it with a new slim-line one that allowed for the millwork and a sectional to both find a home in the room. It opened up the floor space and gave us room to put in a sectional that fits perfectly into the space and still have room for additional chairs for guests. The dark palette makes it perfect for movie watching at any time of day. We made sure to use blackout lining for the wool draperies, which doubles as sound dampening.”
Jess McBride added this to Fall in Love With Lacquer
5. Bookshelf beauty. A masterful testament to the value that professional interior designers bring to a project, every aspect of these built-ins is deliberate and custom-tailored to the room. Lacquer gives the light a stage to dance upon and defies the tired notion that white is always the best way to visually open a space. Click the photo and explore the Comments section for some gems of Meredith Heron’s design wisdom.
Erin Carlyle added this to How to Choose the Paint Color You Really Want
Envision the Feeling You WantSo you’ve decided to paint your room blue. How do you narrow down which blue? It can be helpful to think about the feeling that you want to create in the room, Wardlaw says. If you’re seeking a cozier feel, choose a blue on the darker end. If you’re going for a more serene vibe, a lighter, perhaps sea blue may be better. As you’re drawn to shades of blue, pay attention to whether you prefer blues that tend toward lavender, green or pure hues. Knowing the undertones of the shade you’re selecting is useful when looking for trim and accessories. Wall color: Lead Gray in high-gloss lacquer finish, Benjamin Moore
Becky Harris added this to 8 Bold and Colorful Rooms for Reading
Yummy blue. This room is a lesson in what lacquer can do to a paint color. Interior designer Meredith Heron warns that a lacquer finish can look significantly different than the color you see on the paint chip. While this paint, Lead Gray by Benjamin Moore, is a charcoal gray on the chip and in other finishes, the lacquer brings out the colors that make up the gray. Because of this, it reads more “yummy blue” than charcoal in this cozy library. Heron used the same color paint for the trim in a semigloss finish and for the walls in an eggshell finish. This provides subtle differences between the three surfaces in color as well as finish.Rug: one-of-a-kind Persian, Weavers Art in Toronto; chair and mirror: antique; sectional, drapery, ottoman, pillows and millwork: custom by Meredith Heron Design; ottoman fabric: Beacon Hill; basket: Vintage Fine Objects; table lamp: Arteriors; picture lights: Visual ComfortSee more of this room
