California Cool in the Castro-Bathroom

This Castro neighborhood remodel presented the challenge of transfroming two rather ordinary, window-less bathrooms into modern spa-like rooms. We drew upon water for our inspiration to create a cool and refreshing feeling. The master bathroom tone is established by Carrera marble floors and walls of handmade glass mosaic tiles the color of water flecked with subtle streaks of dark red. A wall-hung wood vanity inspired by a piece of modernist furniture appears to float above the floor. Decorative light fixtures placed directly on the wall-to-wall mirrors bring together the tones of the wood cabinet, polished chrome plumbing fixtures and white porcelain sink. At the powder room, a backlit shoji screen in a narrow slot opposite the vanity was introduced as a lighting element, creating the impression of natural light from a window. Photos by Mark Brand.

That stacked stone is beautiful. The texture looks great under that lighting. This is the closest we have to it, you might be interested http://www.glasstilestore.com/shop-by-colors-now/beige-cream/illusion-3d-brick-crema-marfil-pattern.html

Yes, the mirror needs to be custom made and should be installed by someone who knows what they are doing. The plumbing and the mirror installations need to be well coordinated by your general contractor. Almost any glass and mirror shop should be able to sell you the mirror.

The stone is quartzite. You can get it from Island Stone. They call it wall cladding, Himarchal White. I wouldn't recommend it for a regular use shower. It would be hard to keep clean.

It depends upon what you mean by problematic. This stone has a rough texture. Therefore it would be difficult to keep clean if used in an area which is regularly left wet such as in an everyday use shower or exposed to grease such as a kitchen backsplash behind a range or cooktop. I would use it in an area where you are looking for natural beauty but it will not be exposed regularly to water, grease or other substances which would be difficult to get out of a semi-porous and roughly textured surface.

This project actually consists of two separate bathrooms. The bathtub is actually a tub/shower with a pull-out hand sprayer for occasional use. The master bath has the double vanity and the Mantra blue glass mosaic wall tile.

That is a shower, but not intended for every day use. I would not recommend it for an everyday use shower, but would recommend a ceramic tile instead. Try Porcelanosa for something interesting but more practical.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Kit Pollard added this to Getting Artsy in the Bathroom
I like bathroom art that's placed on a shelf - something about the look just appeals to me. I also like that it's easy to switch out the display.
Lily Gahagan added this to Readers' Choice: The Best Bathrooms of 2010
This minimal bath was a hit, thanks in part to the floating shelf and stone accent wall by the bathtub.
KitchenLab | Rebekah Zaveloff Interiors added this to 7 Tile Tips for Baths on a Budget
The way the tile is wrapped up the front of the tub and up the wall behind the tub defines this bathroom — it wouldn't be as dramatic if it covered every wall. The wall washer recessed can lights also help to highlight this dramatic detail.
Natalie Myers added this to Up and Away: Gravity-Defying Furniture
The small bathroom is taken to another level by floating the small sink vanity a few inches above the floor and providing an accompanying floating shelf in front of the mirror. The simple boxy vanity and chunky shelf become sublime design elements with this small difference in installation.

What Houzzers are commenting on:

privateprivateprivate added this to Apartment bathroom
Simple shelf adds a "landing strip" but might get messy
smithma8 added this to Bathroom Renovation
Tile up the side of the bath and wall behind, but not all the way around to save $
ajc251 added this to Modern Master bath
another example of one wall tiled with taps in wall
Monica added this to MS BATHROOM
I like the shelf running in between the mirror
Meghna Bhagat added this to Guralnik
Up -- Very clean, minimalist with wood accent
