Room to Grow

A growing family and the need for more space brought the homeowners of this Arlington home to Feinmann Design|Build. As was common with Victorian homes, a shared bathroom was located centrally on the second floor. Professionals with a young and growing family, our clients had reached a point where they recognized the need for a Master Bathroom for themselves and a more practical family bath for the children. The design challenge for our team was how to find a way to create both a Master Bath and a Family Bath out of the existing Family Bath, Master Bath and adjacent closet. The solution had to consider how to shrink the Family Bath as small as possible, to allow for more room in the master bath, without compromising functionality. Furthermore, the team needed to create a space that had the sensibility and sophistication to match the contemporary Master Suite with the limited space remaining. Working with the homes original floor plans from 1886, our skilled design team reconfigured the space to achieve the desired solution. The Master Bath design included cabinetry and arched doorways that create the sense of separate and distinct rooms for the toilet, shower and sink area, while maintaining openness to create the feeling of a larger space. The sink cabinetry was designed as a free-standing furniture piece which also enhances the sense of openness and larger scale. In the new Family Bath, painted walls and woodwork keep the space bright while the Anne Sacks marble mosaic tile pattern referenced throughout creates a continuity of color, form, and scale. Design elements such as the vanity and the mirrors give a more contemporary twist to the period style of these elements of the otherwise small basic box-shaped room thus contributing to the visual interest of the space. It is actually a Caesar stone. They have a number of offerings that have a very consistent grain to them. We find them ideal for cleaner aesthetics.

This is a custom vanity that we designed and had assembled by one of our cabinet suppliers. They are a semi-custom cabinet company, but with a little design help, they are happy to work with us.

Hi Juliette. Thanks for your question. We love this bathroom. The wall color is called Breath of Fresh Air (we believe Benjamin Moore makes it) and the vanity and trim is called Cotton balls - so appropriate for a bath, don't you think?!

This is beautiful! Can you tell me what kind of tile is on the floor? Thank you!

It is the iridescent sandstone manufactured by Muse Field.
  • Oceanside Glasstile
The material is from Oceanside Glasstile, as Feinmann suggested it is Oceanside Glasstile's Muse series in the color sandstone. www.glasstile.com

Are there white subway tiles on the back wall? And the counter is something like a crema marble?

Hey Elisabeth, we got the faucets from American Standard - Hampton widespread - chrome finish and white porcelain labeled handles. The Owners supplied the light fixture and we are not completely sure of where they got it. It is 10" in diameter w/ chrome trim and frosted glass. Good luck,

Is the limestone countertops suitable for a child's bathroom or is it too porous?

  • PRO
    Feinmann, Inc.
Thanks for your question. We agree - limestone would be too porous for the countertop. We recommend a quartz because it requires the least amount of maintenance and is durable. You can try Cambria, Caesarstone, or Silestone.

Hi and thanks for your question. The window was there - the home is an exquisite antique Victorian. To preserve the light and the style, we kept the window in place but put a sheet of tempered glass over it.

Hi and thanks for your question. The client purchased these fixtures herself and we don't know exactly where they came from. Also, note that the wide angle lense of the camera distorted the image and they are round and not oval. We found a similar looking fixture through Murray Fleiss called Bentley. Hope that helps!

Travelbear78 thanks for your question. Usually we do not recommend glazed tiles for showers because it can get slippery but because these tiles are smaller, between the grout and pitch it would be possible to use them in a shower. Hope that answers your question!

Is Cesar Stone a good choice for a bathroom counter top in regards to easy maintenance and able to take all that a bathroom counter top can be put through? I am trying to decide between granite and a man made type counter top. I have also looked at Silestone. Is this similar to Cesar Stone?

Hi and thanks for your question. Not sure we understand it. Do you want to know the width of the frame around the mirror? There is no space between the frame and the mirror. That is an optical illusion caused by the photography. The mirror is framed by the wood. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for your interest.
