Thank you! Our fireplace is already built with bricks and we are in the process of giving a "facelift" to ours. Any suggestions on how to add the frame so that the wood does not come near it? For visual, I've attached a photo. We already have the wood and are not sure how to add the frame to create the separation between wood and fire. We would really appreciate your input.

You should still provide a noncombustible material for at least 8-12" around the opening, maybe metal,or you can clad slate or another thin set stone over the existing brick. The framing should be held at least 1" off the existing brick as well. It's really hard to specifically design without actually seeing the fireplace in person, since every situation is different. The fireplace that we used has a self contained fire box and a metal double-walled flue so it was a lot easier to build a frame around it, plus it was all new construction.

I'm making an island exactly like this! Using a custom reclaimed wood company in Montreal. They're called Union Square Vintage Wood.

Beautiful use of reclaimed wood. We find our wood being used more and more with clean, contemporary lines and light colors. Nice work, Richard.

cabinets - reclaimed wood - Hi. Is there a type of treatment on the reclaimed wood cabinets for protection against spills and water damage?

Hi There, Could you tell us the model of fireplace? We are looking to recreate the reclaimed look but no fireplaces we can find include a wide enough metal barrier that covers the entire non-combustable material setbacks required by the manufacturer. We are currently looking at the monessen arlington.

We had originally specified an Isokern fireplace (my first choice), however the homeowner and GC had substituted it for a Heatilator wood burning fireplace.

The Fireplace Enclosure is Reclaimed Oak with a white-wash stain and clear glaze.

Is the island unit in distressed wood? And is that same wood used throughout the kitchen? Are all the worktops stainless steel or are there other materials used?

The cabinets do all look like reclaimed wood rather than distressed. That's a pretty authentic looking patina. The countertops do look like stainless to me!

This project was done back in 2009, but if I recall correctly it was "Autumn Gold" slate purchased from Walker-Zanger

Becky Harris added this to Houzz Tour: Shingle Style Meets Soho on the Jersey Shore
The kitchen uses a wide variety of materials, including reclaimed wood cabinets, mahogany and stainless steel countertops and a slate floor. "Every wall in this house is painted white," Bubnowski says. "There are so many textures, finish colors and beams that we did not need to add color through paint ... we let the white paint act as a backdrop for these materials." The design connects different spaces through materials. In this picture, you can see how the diagonal line of teak beneath the railing plays off the door all the way across the space, and how the reclaimed wood in the kitchen relates to the fireplace. The slate floor is continuous throughout the entire space.
