Its a poured concrete floor with saw cuts. We filled the saw cuts with grout.

Just a follow up to this. Does this mean that the wooden handrail dimensions are also 2" wide, and maybe 1" thick?

The top metal rail is slotted through. The glass is dropped in from above. Then capped with the wood.

Beautiful job on this renovation! - Hard to believe the floors are also concrete! Love the look! The kitchen counters and vanity top are concrete, yet the floor looks totally different- and they are concrete as well. How did you achieve this? We are renovating our home now and I love the look of this house! Great job.

Treads - Hi, can you tell me the dimensions of the treads? I am surprised that the steel plate on the mono stringer isn't longer than it is..... esp. to support the glass railings on one side!

Do you have more information about the concrete staining/polishing? - The floors are beautiful. Was the slab polished or was there an overlay? Any idea of the grit of the abrasive?

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Matt Clawson added this to Building Permits: When a Permit Is Required and When It's Not
Safety first. The most critical objective of the building code is your safety and that of your family. Railing guidelines, for example, are detailed in the International Building Code, defining specific design characteristics that must be met.Railing requirements ensure the safety of small children as well as anyone who might use the stairs. At no location in the railing is a 4-inch sphere permitted to pass through the barrier. Specific handrail details such as height and maximum circumference ensure support can easily be gripped by those of all ages.
Affecting Spaces added this to How to Update Your Stairs and Railings
8. Add Oomph With Open RisersThis amazing look does come with a price. An open, floating staircase needs a steel structure to support it, and steel is expensive. Also, if crawling children will be living in or visiting your home, please ensure that the space between the treads is less than 4 inches so they won’t be able to squeeze through.
