Shower floor - I absolutely love this shower, and the shower floor is beautiful. What tiles are used here? Our builder is really pushing a shower pan as he said it's almost guaranteed that a tiled shower floor will eventually leak. I hate the look of a pan and would prefer this. Should I trust him on this one or just go for the look I want and hope for the best that it never leaks?

I strongly dislike when contractors try to talk customers into a fiberglass pan, take the compromise if needed. I get calls from I'm properly installed fiber glass pans all the time on new homes. If the custom pan is built right, you should not have issues. they do have so many options now a days

Can you have a curbless shower like this one with this pan? The name says single curb but I see curbs on 4 sides. Much of the beauty of the shower is that it has not curb. It is the first such I have seen with a center drain, not a linear drain, which I would prefer. The Tileredi pan does has an integrated linear trench drain.

We haven't moved in yet, however, I am starting to have questions on how to keep them clean. If these are textured, will you please let me know? Love the design!

All you need to do is apply glass sealer annually then wipe with a squeegee from time to time. I recommend a microfilament cloth to clean without a lot of spray cleaners. As for the "special glass," usually it's just a marketing gimic. There is such a thing for commercial applications (extremely expensive), but for shower glass it's usually just the same rain-x type sealer applied to it at the manufacturer. The "reactivator" they sell you for annual reapplication is the same. Sorry if you got taken.

S. Thomas Kutch thanks for your questions and insight. At this point in this renovation I have only help layout out the ground work. The electrical work and framing is all done by other sub trades on the project.

The notch out (recess in floor) was engineered by a structural engineer and all work so far - plumbing, electrical and structure have been inspected and passed by both the structural engineer and city inspectors.

We will be going back to upgrade the subfloor somewhat and start the shower pre-slope process. This will be a large barrier free shower showcasing a nice drain 5"x5" Sioux Chief which I ordered through Noble Company. The shower will have a fixed panel and no door.

As for drilling through framing members those joists are 4"x8" (old 2" stock and new 1 3/4" microlams LVL's) total and no holes are drilled within 2" of the top or bottom.

As for why the electrian drill two holes? Not sure. I do know the work was inspected and past city hall.

Thanks for the comment.

This bar would look good and add a safe entrance to the shower space. Can be mount on both sides of the glass for exit as well. Hook or towel bar can also be mounted to the glass for towels, robes. All mount without drilling and the bar is rated at 250lbs.

I agree with Yarbro above. The clips and u-channel are sufficient, and in fact you could have done silicone-only on the floor safely while also making look a more seamless (u-channel tends to collect grime). The same technique may be used on top of a tub deck.

We are in the midst of redoing/transforming a tub with enclosure into a walk in shower. Dimensions are 5 feet length and only 30 inches in width. We figured if we could stand in it and shower when it was still a tub/shower, we can still stand in it as a shower only. One regret. We miscommunicated with the plumbers.I wanted the pass through to be flush with the rest of the bathroom floor. After the drain and pan and membrane was installed, I noticed they put a lip there. He told me in order to do what I wanted, the rest of my cement floor would have needed to come up and then set to slightly slope toward shower and it's drain. Why wasn't I told that when I was repeating over and over again what I wanted? Guess I have to pick my battles?

There's forced air heating plus heated floor in this bathroom. An open shower is a personal choice. My clients never questioned the extra coldness or the water splashes. But I have clients who do. They want a full enclosed shower to be hot in the steam. I always explain all the options to my clients before. I hope this help.

When installing your wet room system, you should always apply the Tanking system as per the manufacturers specifications and method, if you are intending installing electric underfloor heating, this should be installed on top of the membrane, I prefer to use Warmup pro-wire system, the cable is loose, which allows you to cover the floor area more evenly than when using a mat, the mats are fine for larger rooms, but generally bathrooms are smaller and have restrictions to where you can run a mat, also the Pro-wire has a very small profile and you can tile directly on top of it, remember to use a plastic notched trowel though to prevent damaging the wire.

Hi Gwen, from the comments and Q&A it sounds like the shower shelf porcelain tile edges were not treated and the raw edge is exposed. But on the edges of the shower walls at the top aluminum tile trim was used. I'm not fully understanding why these edges were trimmed with aluminum tile trim while the soap shelf tile edges were left with raw edges exposed. Also: regarding the shower soap shelf are the edges of the porcelain tiles uncut? If so then perhaps these edges have some sort of epoxy/enamel finish which is presentable when exposed?
Thanks

Tricon, the edges on the soap niches were polished to have a smooth aspect on the wall. I guess we could have left the edges on the shower walls un-trimmed as well. The tile installer preferred to finish it that way.

Here is the answer from L. Yarbrough, the contractor and builder with whom I worked on this project: "I did lower all the wood floor joists in the shower floor location. Approximately 3 inches. Then it was built back up with a traditional " mud set" / "mud pack" waterproof shower pan. I basically " dug out" the floor joists. Carefully measured so that the shower floor tile and main bathroom floor tiles were going to meet flush with each other after the pan was complete." He also had to reinforce all the floor joists in the shower floor location which was pretty intense work. Definitely a job for a professional.

Seaview Glass (Everett, WA) was the supplier of the shower glass as well as the mirrors and the frosted glass panels between the master bath and bedroom (cf. other photos of the project).

I love this shower floor and the 0 height entry, I would like to rebuild my shower similar to this but i'm on a concrete slab and something like this will require a jackhammer. And that wont be fun.

Is the 3" drop because of building code? I've heard there are plumbing codes related to being able to "trap" water up to about 3". Was that true in this case?

Mosaic is glass from daltile but I do not remember the specifics. Color is brownish. Tile installer put more mortar to level 2 tiles. An entire shower could be tiled with mosaic glass (no issue).

Floor heating is outside the shower only.
Floor inside the shower is sloped on all sides towards the drain. We talked about having a long bar drain placed along the back wall with one slope towards it. We chose the center drain.

@lgamiere - Seaview Glass (Everett, WA) was the supplier of the shower glass as well as the mirrors and the frosted glass panels between the master bath and bedroom (cf. other photos of the project).

@tbonsangue - I don't have the answer re. the pricing of the tempered glass.

How did you prevent the shower base from being slippery ? - Hello glass tile mosaics are slippery by nature since they have very smooth surface compared to other tiles , i know one idea to fight it is to use the smalles size possible and also textured glass tiles and one other thing i know is to use sanded grout do you have other tips you can give me ? and how is the surface of your glass tiles ? from the webpage of daltile as far as i can say from the photos of city lights collection they have a texture they are not super smooth is that right ?

The city lights mosaic tiles have a little texture but this was not the reason why we chose it for the shower (we liked the color). Usually 2x2 tiles offer enough grout lines to prevent slipping in a shower. I recently completed a bathroom (see Madison Park - Seattle) where I used 1x1 hexagon shaped marble tile on the floor. Marble is so smooth that larger tile sizes are not recommended for floors. The hexagon tiles are just fine (and so pretty!). Thx.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Vanessa Brunner added this to Readers' Choice: The 10 Most Popular Bathrooms of 2012
1. Open-concept shower in Washington state. Crisp tiles and a smart shower layout inspired Houzzers' own bathroom remodels. Houzz readers saved this photo for its open-concept shower, simple tub and mix of tile styles.
Ventana Construction LLC added this to 10 Amenities to Make Your Bathroom Extraordinary
9. Handheld showerhead. If you are still mulling over your showerhead options, don’t leave out the handheld ones. While they can be a bit unwieldy with their hoses and pivoting heads, they have a distinct advantage over their fixed-in-place cousins: They make it easy to clean the shower stall. The showerhead that comes from the ceiling? Supercool, but good luck washing the walls of your shower with it. Same thing with showerheads on the wall. A nice compromise between the two, if you can afford it, is to get one of each with a diverter. That will allow you to use the main showerhead most of the time, the handheld one for cleaning and both at the same time if you want a spa experience.10. Epoxy grout. It is more expensive, unwieldy to work with and stinks. But epoxy grout has a big benefit over its sanded and nonsanded cousins: It makes it difficult for mildew to grow, and liquids have a hard time penetrating it. We have been installing it frequently in master showers and at kitchen backsplashes (where food and grease can splatter) with great results.Tell us: Do you have other things beyond these 10 that you can’t live without in your bathroom?
MyFixitUpLife show added this to 9 Surprising Considerations for a Bathroom Remodel
3. Think threshold. Curbless showers are awesome, but for the water to flow into the drain, the floor has to be high enough to pitch the tile into the drain. When you add thickness to the floor, you have to think about the transitions into the room. If someone needs to wheel into the room, accommodations must be made.

What Houzzers are commenting on:

bcroda added this to Cave Creek Home
9. Use your main tile to frame a second tile. If your main tile of choice does not offer good slip resistance on your shower floor, you can frame a smaller tile with a larger tile.Keep in mind that you will need to miter the corners so they can tip into the shower and you can achieve the pitch you need.
