The LED strips were only in the niche and under the bench. The onyx is only being lit by the two downlights above. If we would have backlit the onyx, we would have needed a void space behind and depending on how much of a void, we would have chosen an appropriate light source. In a shallow void, you might have needed an LED light sheet and if there was a deep void, it could have been done with linear strips. This was never our intent with this slab. Thx.

Hi Gregg,

You wrote: "...but the interior designer has a way of hiding things like the no\zzle, it may be under the bench."

I don't think so, because if the "steam nozzle" is under the bench, you couldn't sit on it while steam is coming out. It would be too hot for your legs. So if this is a steam shower, the "steam nozzle" could be hidden in the curb/threshold on the right side or what I would try to accomplish, inside the linear drain - located on the Onyx wall.

Regards.

Susan, we didn't backlight the slab. With virtually flat LED light panels no available, this would be relatively easy to do today. When we designed this a few years ago we didn't have such an option. Without a light source like an LED light panel we would have needed a lot of depth behind the slab to backlight it evenly. With the architecture we had to work with, we didn't have that option. Thx.

Hi Clare, the answer is yes, however first I would need a couple more information.

What material is the bench. Is the bench tiled or it is a granite or marble slab? ( A full piece of slab would be very heavy!) Are the walls already framed (especially the knee wall) and if yes what material was used? (For example: 3"x4" wooden framing with both sides gyprock screwed)

On the side of the full wall it is not a problem at all. The tricky part is on the open end of the knee wall.

I assume you would need a welded metal construction which holds the bench. (The best would be Stainless steel, at least in the shower area, inside the wall this could bee painted steel.) I would this "metal-construction" probably fasten to the floor joists of if possible to a beam.

You can e-mail me so I could send you a drawing. A sketch and pictures of the open walls and if possible also a picture of the floor joists would be very helpful.

Cheers Bertram

The bench will be made of stone (caesarstone, most likely). I would like it to have a beefed up look (similar to the photo above but maybe slightly slimmer)...i am thinking somewhere btwn 2-3". Nothing has been constructed yet (the knee wall currently does not exist so it can be made using whatever materials you think best). Can't send pics of the floor joists yet as it's not demo'd yet...

It really depends on your budget and the dimensions you have behind the slab. If you have a little space, something like Lumi-Sheet or CoolEdge provides a great option that's nearly flat, but pricey. If you have more space, you could use a few rows of LED tapelight spaced appropriately for the depth of the cavity. The best way to know how it's going to look is to mock it up. good Luck!

As the lighting designer, I was involved in the design and specification, not the installation. However, I can tell you we did use wet location listed LED strip lights. The connections of strip lights listed for wet locations are already per-sealed. I've seen mounting channels fastened with clear silicone to stone like this and under the bench, that could be how they did the installation. Inside the niche, there's a good chance they mechanically fastened the mounting channel to the lid of the niche with screws. Thx.

I was the lighting designer on the project, not the interior designer. I'm not sure about it's availability in Egypt, but it is an Onyx slab. For something with this much texture and color, I would guess it is around $3,000 - $6,000US for the slab at the rear. For the lighting, used some wet location rated strip lights and square aperture recessed lights that might have been about $1,500 installed

This was designed a few years ago and technology has changed quite a bit. I believe those were white Color Kinetics strips at the time, but today I would use a wet location channel and strip light combination. There are many to choose from but a couple of my favorites are Paradigm LED http://www.houzz.com/pro/paradigmled/paradigmled and Environmental Lights http://www.environmentallights.com/

If you take a little time and look through the questions/answers related to this photo, I think you will find a few suppliers. You may have one reply, but if not, I think the information is there. Good Luck!

This slab of onyx is not backlit although we have done backlit onyx on a number of other projects. It works well with the right piece.

Thx.

Comment - Fabulous! So beautiful. But if this marble is out of your budget, a large topographical map, in the same color tones, could work too. Would just have to be sealed, somehow, against water.

The architect was Tom Cole with Points West Architecture in Vail, Colorado. You could contact him if you were very interested in seeing this in floorplan view. http://www.pointswestvail.com/aboutus.html Good luck.

I apologize, one of my houzz settings changed and I didn't know I had this question outstanding. If you look through some of the other questions, you'll see the answer from the person who did the stone wall. I believe it is a type of green onyx.

I believe this is a slab of onyx. If you look at some of the other question threads about this shower, I think you can find the exact type of stone. Good luck!

The back wall is actually illuminated from the front, not the rear. If you are looking to do a similar detail, but backlight a translucent stone, you must just design access to the light. Depending on the amount of space you have behind the wall, the type of source may vary. If you have a lot of space, say more than 12", you may want to look at using strip fluorescent lights on a spacing where you can't see any lamp imaging. For many pieces of stone I've backlit, the amount of light you get from fluorescents can really make it look good. If you only have a few inches, you should use a backlight like an LED light sheet which can provide even lighting with as little as 1/2" clearance. Even though this should last a very long time, it may go out and need to be maintained. You may have to design in some sort of track (like a sliding door track) and a flexible electrical feed such that you can slide out the light sheet if you need to get to it.

I can't seem to find my archive drawings, but guessing that the ceiling tiles are something like 18"x24" I would estimate that this is about 6'wide x 5'deep. I'm not sure how accurate my guess is, but that's the best I can give you at this time. Good luck!

The strips in the niche and under the bench were 3000k, but the onyx wall is only lit from the front. This design was done just before I saw my first light sheet so there is no backlighting. That would have been a perfect solution here.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Kristy Woodson Harvey and Beth Woodson added this to See How One Feature Can Make a Room Captivating
If there is one thing that consistently makes a room, it's the art. It's tempting to stick with paintings in the palette of the room, but sometimes finding a piece you love is the most important thing. It's amazing how easily those pieces often work with the design you already have.
Bud Dietrich, AIA added this to Tune In to the Music of Architecture
Marcato. This is when a particular piece (note, cord or passage in music) is played louder and more forcibly. This is akin to the accent wall in architectural design. Maybe another color or another material, the piece that is played marcato takes center stage and enriches the space it inhabits.
Bryan Anthony added this to Photo Flip: 50 Showers That Create a Splash
