Sherolene - The fireplace is open on all sides as it is a gas burning fireplace. The fireplace box was custom designed by Specialty Fireplaces.
Penny - The painting is by Max Hammond, Bonner David Galleries, Scottsdale, AZ. I believe this is the only one of its kind, though he has other wonderful paintings in the same style.
Dean - All of our fireplaces are custom designed and built for our homes in collaboration with Specialty Fireplaces, Sheetworks of AZ, and Bonano Masonry.

It is an exposed polished aggregate, it has saw cuts to mimic the curve of the hallway.

We've never built a house in California and are unfamiliar with the specifics of their design code. I can tell you however, that it probably differs slightly depending on what city you are in.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Becky Harris added this to Houzz Tour: Open Living in the Arizona Desert
Every room in the house has at least one entire wall of glass," says Tate. The glass is insulated and energy efficient, as well as coated to protect from harmful UV rays. Channel-set glazing lets it disappear into the walls and blurs the line between indoors and out. The three-sided cantilevered fireplace creates a striking transition between the large great room and the more intimate hearth room. It sits atop a natural honed limestone slab with chiseled edges. Painting: Max Hammond
Shane D. Inman added this to Double-Sided Fireplaces Multiply Design Options
Three-sided. This designer made a fireplace with three exposed sides for triple the enjoyment. The flames can be seen and the heat can be felt from every angle. Tip: This fireplace has no door, so beware if you have children or pets. Not all fireplaces make sense for all families.
