What Houzz contributors are saying:
Cost of Remodeling a Small Kitchen The cost of undertaking a major remodel of a kitchen that’s less than 200 square feet averages $25,800, based on the costs reported by survey respondents. For the purposes of this survey, a major remodel includes replacing all the cabinetry and appliances. Diving deeper into your own project, you’ll have to consider that custom cabinets will cost significantly more than prefabricated ones. And new state-of-the-art appliances will cost considerably more than, say, the floor units at a big-box store or those purchased in an online holiday sale. Remodels that didn’t include replacing the appliances and cabinets were considered minor for the sake of the survey. The average cost of a minor remodel in a less-than-200-square-foot kitchen was $13,700.
4. Spring for custom cabinets. Going with custom cabinets will definitely add cost to your project, but if you’re trying to maximize every square inch of space, customizing will give you the most flexibility. That’s what designer Brad Belka did for the owners of this 100-square-foot kitchen, which includes a recessed cabinet pantry, countertop drawers, rollout garbage cans and backless cabinets that allow plates and glasses to be accessed from an adjacent dining room.See more of this kitchen
AFTER: Designer Brad Belka had the kitchen gutted to the studs. He then closed off the door leading to the dining room to get another corner for storage. While there wasn’t room for an island, the U-shape layout maximizes counter space. The original windows sat too low to allow cabinets and countertops beneath them, so Belka put in shorter windows and positioned a new apron-front sink beneath them. Custom cabinets offered the homeowners the most flexibility. “It adds cost, but in a small space, it goes a long way to getting you what you need,” Belka says. Painting them white helped brighten the room and bounce around light. “A dark kitchen in this size space would feel a little bit oppressive,” he says.A counter-depth refrigerator, 24 inches wide and deep, saves space. Open shelves display the homeowners’ pottery collection.
