1850 Farmhouse

Modern Farmhouse

Haus Interior Design
This 1850s farmhouse in the country outside NY underwent a dramatic makeover! Dark wood molding was painted white, shiplap added to the walls, wheat-colored grasscloth installed, and carpets torn out to make way for natural stone and heart pine flooring. We based the palette on quintessential American colors: red, white, and navy. Rooms that had been dark were filled with light and became the backdrop for cozy fabrics, wool rugs, and a collection of art and curios. Strong visual corridor from driveway to front door, but many twists and turns to get there. All high voltage fixtures were gutted, re-wired and converted to low voltage L.E.D. fixtures.

Fireplaces are located in all public rooms, again typical of homes without central heating. Delft tile was a cherished embellishment in homes during this period. Rather than use a hearth stone where wear and tear is at a minimum, cobolt blue ceramic tiles were used as a striking complement to the delft colors. Photo by Scott Design Inc.

This dining room, original to the 1850's farmhouse, is at the center of the home. It made sense to incorporate several of the colors that you would see throughout the rest of the house. In keeping with the character of the home, we chose not install overhead lighting and instead opted to upcycle two old wooden chandeliers and then outfit them with a dozen different lampshades. They turned out to be a great conversation starter as everyone at the table has a favorite, and usually a story to go with it! Photo~ Jared Saulnier

Classic Greek Revival elements...pediment, entablature, wide corner boards and window trim, deep overhangs. We used the chimney bricks from the original 1850 home for the front walkway and all field stone from the property for foundation and retaining walls. Photo from Engel-Voelkers

Old houses are nothing if not forgiving. We took advantage of this when we combined a few styles that the homeowner already owned. As this is a reading room, we wanted to offer a play on words, most literally, by throwing a simple gray rug on the floor adorned with prominent poets and authors. The table welcomes its new indoor life as it previously was used for weighing small livestock. The art behind the chaise is actually dyed lily pads dried and mounted on fabric panels.
