Shipping containers... the future of mass produced modular housing. While they may not sound too appealing at first - there are fantastic things being done with them in places like Rotterdam. And being steel they re recycled and recyclable! Do a search for "National Geographic - student homes- Holland - shipping containers". There are even some links there. Good luck

What's the roof on this house? Tar and gravel? Something else?

Thank you! I've decided to go with the standard size door width 36" and height of 79". I live in the south and a screen door is necessary to keep the bugs out and the cool air flowing.

The red doors go really well with MCM homes. You can find original Eichler "accent" colors on the Eichler Network site, where they also have "body" colors as well. In case you want to go with the original palette. The link is: http://www.eichlernetwork.com/article/hues-say-you

Some day I will live in an Eichler. I was a participating artist in the San Mateo Eichler Home Tour in May where I furnished all of the paintings for the entire house. I loved these homes growing up in the Bay Area and I love them more then ever now.

Unfortunately, we don't have the exact color, but it was a taupe, and Benjamin Moore. I wish I could provide more information.

I'm replacing my exterior front door. I'm considering a 42" fir door with 16.75" sidelites. I'm working with an 83" entry. I have a single story 1630 sq ft home. Do you think this size door will be too large?

We didn't write this down, but I believe it's Benjamin Moore "Rhubarb"

Or maybe it's Benjamin Moore "Navajo Red"... I seem to remember that was the color we used, not sure why I earlier mentioned "Rhubarb" though. Best to check both colors!

Hi, this door was custom made by a local shop. It's a solid core 1 3/4"-thick door with smooth faces.

We used "Navajo red" on the front door. It's similar to some of the original Eichler door colors...

What Houzz contributors are saying:

1. Dark Red Door With Light NeutralsI love lots of bold color, but I can also appreciate showing restraint, especially when you have such nice clean lines to work with. If you keep the siding, trim and accent colors on your exterior light and neutral, you can put any color you desire on the front door. A deep saturated red works great here. This is a smart exterior color palette for a home in a hot climate, because light house colors don't absorb as much heat as darker colors do.
Bud Dietrich, AIA added this to When to Paint Your Home Gray
A wonderful feature of the color gray is how with just the smallest amount of tint, the color can be transformed. You can take gray to a whole new place with just a hint of green or some other color.
Vanessa Brunner added this to How to Choose the Right Exterior Color
Gray. Gray's wide range of hues makes it a great fit for house exteriors in all styles. This basic neutral can be warmed up or cooled down to work with just about any accent color. Play with bold oranges and greens for a midcentury modern home or stick to basic white trim and black accents for a more traditional house. See: When to Paint Your Home Gray
Sarah Phipps Design added this to Clues to Your Home's Architectural History
Joseph Eichler developed a fascination with architecture after living in a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. (Modern architecture somehow all goes back to Wright, doesn't it?) Eichler wasn't a trained architect and never held a hammer, but as a developer, he created homes different from the average suburban tract homes. Some of their most recognizable elements were floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding glass doors, large beams, tongue and groove ceilings, flat roofs, steeply pitched gables, wide overhangs, triangular windows placed between horizontal joists and the roof, and indoor atriums. It's fitting to end this ideabook with Eichler, because his goal was to create homes for the average person that were stylish, functional and affordable. Many of his homes are being lovingly renovated today.Your turn: What style(s) do you see in your house?More: Learn more about the roots of U.S. home styles

9. Indulge with red. Neutral colors add sophistication, but a vibrant red door makes a strong statement. Hundreds of shades are available, from rich crimson to dark burgundy, so try a few swatches first to see how they look at different times of the day. Here the white trim adds extra impact to the modern exterior.Front and Center Color: When to Paint Your Front Door Red
