    We usually have our metal fabricator make a t-shaped support that we attach to the wood studs and stick out before sheet rock and then we attach the shelve over the metal support. You can do the same over the sheet rock but I find the shelf isn't as stable this way. IKEA has a similar system that you buy off the shelf.
