dimensions picture shelf - same question as someone prior to me... How far from the wall in inches does the picture shelf protrude ? Also, are the pictures able to lean on on the wall? Or are they attached to something? Is there a groove or a lip of some sort on the rail to keep the pictures from falling?

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Karen Egly-Thompson added this to Fabric Focus: Decorating With Touchy-Feely Velvet
Velvet ConsChallenging to clean. Velvet is known to be more difficult to clean and maintain than many other fabrics. If you have pets, consider that velvet unfortunately is a magnet for fur. You’ll likely become friendly with your lint brush. Also, velvet shouldn’t be cleaned with water or with water-based cleaners, because they can flatten the fibers and change their appearance. Velvet upholstery needs to be cleaned with a solvent-based cleaner by a professional upholstery cleaning company. Some advertise they specifically have experience cleaning velvet and other specialty fabrics, so do your research. It doesn’t hurt to request cleaning testimonials too.Expensive. Quality velvet tends to be on the pricey side compared to other upholstery fabrics. Expect to pay in the range of $70 per yard for a quality branded poly/cotton velvet to $300 per yard for a silk or mohair. However, durable velvet can be found at discount fabric outlets in the $30-to-$70-per-yard range too.
Susan Redman added this to Your Essential Sofa Buying Guide
Turner PocockFrame Material and ConstructionA sturdy frame usually contributes to a long-lasting sofa. A wooden frame is best, especially if it is a quality wood that has been kiln-dried. (Be wary of cheap pine or green wood, which can warp over time.) The frame should be secured together by dowels or nails; avoid those that are held together by staples and glue. The legs should be either part of the frame or solidly attached. Metal frames may be necessary when the seat of the sofa has a large span, but they can make the sofa heavy and hard to move.Find a sofa for your home in the Houzz Shop
Rise Art added this to An Insider’s Guide to Creating the Perfect Gallery Wall
Get a layered look. There’s no law that says artwork has to be neatly or uniformly hung. Layering pieces on top of each other, as in this shelf display, creates a casual, accessible vibe.
Karen Egly-Thompson added this to 8 Ways to Arrange Artwork
5. On ShelvesWhat it is: Pictures aren’t hung on the wall but leaned on an architectural feature, such as a shelf.Benefit: If you like to change your artwork frequently, but aren’t handy with a hammer or have space constraints, this is a good choice. The shelf approach also offers an added opportunity to layer smaller frames in front of larger ones.Size of wall space: Depending on whether you want a single shelf or multiple shelves stacked upon each other, you can pull this look off with a large or small wall.Limitations: The size of your wall is a limitation in terms of the shelf size but, as mentioned above, this is a flexible approach allowing for moving and changing pieces. If you’re considering stacking shelves, you need to make sure the height of your largest picture on each shelf will fit.
Sophie Baylis added this to A Rug Can Make a Room — but What Kind to Choose?
Twist-pile rugs. Pile not only affects the look and feel of a rug, it also indicates the degree of wear you should expect. Twist pile is the most popular and is made from twisted fibers to create a coarse, hard-wearing finish that’s perfect for busy areas. “Twist carpets are available in a huge range of colors and styles,” Haigh says. “Depending on the material your twist pile is made from, these rugs are more likely to flatten than loop or cut piles.”
Nicole Jacobs added this to The Clever Ledge: Where and How to Use It
Picture ledge. Not quite a floating shelf and not a built-in architectural element, this treatment is perhaps the most cost-effective way of using a ledge in your home. Made fairly simply from inexpensive strips of wood, the picture rail is installed in the wall and used to arrange art and photography in an informal way. Here, the rails are painted the same color as the wall, blending in while still adding some depth.
