Amy Alper, AIAModern Bathroom, San Francisco

This condominium, built in the ‘80’s was out of date. The living space was opened to dramatic effect and rebalanced compositionally while walls were added to the open but poorly laid out lower level to create a new washing and bathroom room and master closet. The project, replete with all new finishes, is unified with the color palatte yet the play of textures makes unique each delightful space.

Cork actually works wonderfully in a bathroom, it does not soak up water. Cork flooring is protected with polyurethane which protects the cork from water spills or stains. Cork flooring is a warmer, more comfortable floor than ceramic tile. If a small amount of water gets onto the floor (stepping out of a shower for example), just wipe it up. This is the same as any other natural floor - you don't want water pooling on it. Another great option for cork flooring is Cork Mosaic (made in North America). Cork mosaic is recommended for areas where there are heavy amounts of water.

Thanks for info on cork in wet areas. Of course it was in common use in kitchens in the 50s and I see it wearing well.

It is a stained rift cut white oak. Colors are hard to see in this photos..it is actually less of a warm hue and is a blend with the taupe tones.

Ceasarstone in Mocha. The trim on the linen closet side is just MDF that was painted in a high gloss to match the color of the Ceasarstone.

Alper scooped up this space and reassigned it to a new bathtub and vanity room. Now the tub sits in the bay where the window seat was. She reassigned the old mirrored closet to upper and lower recessed cabinets with touch-latch hardware; two of those cabinets are shown on the right side of this photo. Alper balanced the room with a thoughtful flow of color and materials. The floor tile continues up the tub surround. The 1½-inch-thick Caesarstone from the countertop continues around the room as a sill. The same white oak lines all the lower cabinets on the right side of the room.Sconces on dimmers create a flattering light.Cabinets: custom, Hope Cabinetry and Builders; window treatments: Smith and Noble; sconces: Elf2 Bath Light; tile: Styles Tile and Stone; hardware: Sugatsune; sinks: Kohler; faucets: Axor Starck, Hansgrohe

Cool bathroom. I like the windows next to the tub and how it’s in the woods.
