Hi GMF, that is very interesting. I am about to build my home and I designed a covered arched patio on the front. I been going crazy thinking of the depth cause I know we won't be out there much, but I love the look! Why do you say FUNCTIONING? Functioning how? Are you saying to sit under? Cause I was thinking maybe 6ft, but now that you say this maybe we should do 8?

The look Im going for is similar to this...

8-0 is a good rule-of-thumb. When setting chairs on a sheltered porch, where ceilings are 8-0 to 9-0 feet high, there needs to be enough room to walk by the chair and still be sheltered by the porch. When the porch ceilings are taller, as shown in your photos with the porch arches, chairs would be dwarfed in such a grand porch. In that case the entire 8-0 width is again the right width without chairs in a grand porch, now proportional for a promenade. 8-0 works there too. Bigger is also good, just not less than 8-0.

This porch deck is No. 1 pressure treated pine 5/4 x 6 boards. No. 1 select boards have very few knots and other blemishes in the surface. They are economical compared to the synthetic products on the market.

What stain did you use for the deck?

Patio Atruim Door - one side opens and the other side is fixed. There is a screen on a track for the side that opens.

8. Classic Rockers in VirginiaOn the back porch of a Virginia Beach home, a line of rocking chairs painted a deep green provides an ideal spot for taking in views of the back garden.Try at home: Stick to the classics. If you have a small space or busy exterior, sometimes the simplest design is the strongest one. Really, what more do you need than a comfortable spot to rest, perhaps in the ease of a rocking chair or gentle sway of a swing, to enjoy being out on the porch?Green paint: Shamrock, Sherwin-Williams

I have always loved verandas... but never considered as think would make back of house too dark as north-facing (e.g. our bedroom is really dark with the covered balcony - less important as a bedroom though...)
