These long white swing arm lamps blend right into the wall, allowing the ornate black chandelier to get the attention it's due. Where do you fall on the bedroom sconce vs. table lamps debate? There's a dark beauty in the chilling look of the woman in the painting. The artwork adds intrigue to an already mysterious room that features a vintage chandelier and black-and-white bedding.

1. Casual, crisp black and white. I love the modern reading lamps and how they contrast with the chandelier and painting. There's a casual feeling about this room I like. This is a stay-in-bed-and-read-the-paper kind of bedroom. A frequent challenge in designing a bedroom is the big blank space over the bed. Do you use a headboard? Art? One large piece or lots of smaller pieces? Skip art altogether and go for wallpaper? This room solves that dilemma with white trim and walls and a casual approach with the art. There doesn't even seem to be a headboard.

Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over, I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. What I learned: Purchasing one great art piece can take a room to a whole new level.

I LOVE everything about this space. Artsy, functional, elegant, casual, old and new. Clean, crisp, blacks whites.
