Cabinetry and a kitchen countertop from IKEA turned the office into a highly functional space. Black-and-white curtains that span the wall are used to create the illusion of symmetry despite the off-center window.

Like rugs, curtains will do a world of wonders for warming up your college space. You can either create your own curtains using IKEA fabric, as in this picture, or buy them already made, like a pair of Wilma curtains.

Countertop over the heater. Don't let your radiator eat up precious room. Build over it. This home office added an extra work surface directly over the radiator at desk height. Since the average radiator is only about 12 inches from the wall, you can make the countertop more shallow if you like. Make sure any combustible countertop material is at least 9 to 12 inches above the radiator, though.
