Bungalow WestCraftsman Staircase, Seattle

Additional space at the top of an adjacent closet provided an opportunity to create a home for the family puppy. This arched opening is consistent with the rest of the home and provides a wonderful spot for the dog to survey both floors of the home. John Wilbanks Photography

Thank you! The new staircase blocked off a small closet so we decided to extend the landing area into a small recess for a dog with an arch that matched what was happening in the Living Room. Ironically the clients didn't have a dog at the time but this space was designed with a dog in mind.

9. The canine of this house has a view of both upstairs and downstairs from its niche in a stairway landing. The arched opening matches other doorways in the Craftsman home in Seattle. The designers at Board and Vellum carved the recess from an adjacent closet with a dog in mind. The space came first, the dog came later.

The door for the dog, of course!
