The panels up the front of the fireplace are steel?
  • patsyk1960

Can this process be used for outdoor metal panels. I just had panels installed and I WANT to keep the hot rolled black look and not let it go to rust. Thanks

I hope this gives you great enjoyment!

The material is, indeed, cold-rolled steel plate with a gun-metal blue patina. It has a hand-waxed finish on top. A specialty metal fabricator should know how to apply the finish. Enjoy!

What kind of treatment was done to get this color?

Would this tile be attached like tile would or would it be bolted to the wall? It looks like there is grout. Thank you.

Can you please provide details on the metal/tile surround material?

Try taping off 20" from the floor ..a box around 40" wide and 20-24 tall...a much more contemporary shape and proportionately better than a more square box....with such a tall surround...the fire configuration could also be more contemporary with spaced flames in glass pebbles for instance...a few moments exploring photos in Houzz should offer lots of examples...perhaps type " tall contemporary fireplaces" ....a picture is better than a thousand words...

Here is the answer that Brent of a Colorado sip generously placed in answer to a similar question re a similar fireplace (search Houzz Capitol Creek by Derek Skalko)
The Castle Creek fireplace used a 1/8" thick steel plate called laser plate. One could also start with a 'pickled and oiled' plate. A material that is without mill scale. The surface was orbital sanded thru to a 240 grit finish. We used the Birchwood Casey product M20 deluted 50% with distilled water. This patina is a solution that includes selenious and phosphoric acids. The diluted patina was sprayed on with misting bottle and worked in with fine Scotchbrite pads and kept wet with the patina until the desired color was reached. It was then immediately flooded with water and force dried with compressed air and towels. Your metal worker can decide what lacquer to best use, there are many that would work I believe. http://birchwoodtechnologies.com/antiquing/options.html

    Weggis......looks nice.
    Sincerely,
    Brent

This project was done before the builders code changed- wood-burning fireplaces were allowed back then.

The surround is made with steel plates which are finished with a gun-metal blue patina and handwaxed. There are a few discussions on our page about the fireplace which may be helpful for you. Enjoy!
