Hi cgilly. There is currently no known way to stop heat in your house to travel thru ones walls or ceilings. Insulation merely slows down this process. Insulation with an R value of 38 slows down the heat better than an R value of 13. Since heat rises, you would want the insulation in the ceiling to have R-38 or greater.

I agree with Kurt but check and see what Home Depot sells them for. It will give you a better idea of what you will spend (its the pink insulation)

What material are the turquoise pillars and where would I find something like that?

The pillars are part of the original construction. They are actually a a metal pillar and more of a natural grey color.

I found one almost identical at Homegoods. I was surprised to see something so similar here.

The painting is a vintage piece found in Waco. The artist is Walter McCowen. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Built in 1956, this colorful midcentury modern family room still has its original cork ceiling with wood strips. Other modernist touches: the orange Jonathan Adler table, olive green Draper chairs (from Thayer Coggin), and the iconic George Nelson bubble pendant over the dining table.

7. No subtlety here. This open living room is all about staying true to midcentury modern style, with scoops of radiant colors set against an original 1956 cork ceiling and brick wall.See more photos of this home

Midcentury modern can be all white and wood, or it can be all white and wood and splashes of amazing, bright, cheerful color. This couch has real personality.
