What color is the fireplace? I think I would line it with metal. The ideal in my mind would be a fabricated insert that is completely sealed (edges welded) and powdercoated to match the fireplace. Bear in mind that firewood is messy and can bring in insects; because of that I wouldn't choose a built-in woodbox but it's a personal preference.

I love the womb chair. What is the material and color used for the upholstery?

The metal fireplace surround is stainless steel. It is custom made by a metal worker.

They were custom made. They're steel plate with a powder coated finish.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Vanessa Brunner added this to Houzz Tour: Modern Home, Full of Character
Custom metal bookshelves line the wall of the second floor family room. A hidden wall of white storage cabinets with concealed hardware is just visible on the back wall. While many of the pieces of furniture in the home were custom designed, McCafferty and Stern also incorporated pieces the family owned and loved — although many of these were reupholstered to fit with the new space. By combining these products with a few new classic mid-century items, Stern and McCafferty were able to accomplish a look that's as eclectic and bold as its residents.

This room has a vibe that's cozy and inviting. Wool rugs are really nice to have in winter because they add both visual and physical warmth to a space.

An accent chair. Feel like the space could use a pop of color or a hint of pizzazz? Try an accent chair. Think of a color that will really stand out against your current scheme, and try to scout something that falls in that shade. Again, don’t forget to look at the flea market! You could find an incredible piece at a bargain.

These shelves stand out from the previous examples in the extremely thin edge profile and apparent lack of supports.

Incorporate an accent chair. An accent chair in a different color or fabric brings a pop of personality to your space. Reupholster your favorite chair in a brand-new fabric for utmost comfort and style.

A single spot of color in an otherwise neutral room is arresting and beautiful. It's the way to go if you're not prepared to go crazy with color.

Sheepskin rugs. The organic feel of wool in its more natural state always makes a room feel cozy and comfortable. Don't worry about the long fibers — wool resists crushing.

6. Show chair whimsy. Convey your lighter side by including something unexpected. A completely neutral room of white and gray shows its whimsical side with a hot-pink Saarinen Womb Chair. Bet you didn't see this one coming.

Go for luxury underfoot. Take your regular floor coverings to the cleaners and substitute a flokati or shag carpet for the winter. The long fibers and fluffy texture will create a supercomfortable place for your stockinged feet. Bright white flokatis are gorgeous against dark wood flooring and are heavenly to sit on while flipping through those holiday catalogs.
