Inspiration for a coastal living room remodel in Minneapolis with gray walls

Having been neglected for nearly 50 years, this home was rescued by new owners who sought to restore the home to its original grandeur. Prominently located on the rocky shoreline, its presence welcomes all who enter into Marblehead from the Boston area. The exterior respects tradition; the interior combines tradition with a sparse respect for proportion, scale and unadorned beauty of space and light. An accomplished potter and her husband own this Vineyard Haven summer house. Gil Walsh worked with the couple to build the house’s décor around the wife’s artistic aesthetic and her pottery collection. (She has a pottery shed (studio) with a kiln). They wanted their summer home to be a relaxing home for their family and friends. The main entrance to this home leads directly to the living room, which spans the width of the house, from the small entry foyer to the oceanfront porch. Opposite the living room behind the fireplace is a combined kitchen and dining space. All the colors that were selected throughout the home are the organic colors she (the owner) uses in her pottery. (The architect was Patrick Ahearn).

Inspiration for a timeless staircase remodel in Charleston

Hillside Farmhouse sits on a steep East-sloping hill. We set it across the slope, which allowed us to separate the site into a public, arrival side to the North and a private, garden side to the South. The house becomes the long wall, one room wide, that organizes the site into its two parts. The garage wing, running perpendicularly to the main house, forms a courtyard at the front door. Cars driving in are welcomed by the wide front portico and interlocking stair tower. On the opposite side, under a parade of dormers, the Dining Room saddle-bags into the garden, providing views to the South and East. Its generous overhang keeps out the hot summer sun, but brings in the winter sun. The house is a hybrid of ‘farm house’ and ‘country house’. It simultaneously relates to the active contiguous farm and the classical imagery prevalent in New England architecture. Photography by Robert Benson and Brian Tetrault
