A New Chapter for an Old Space
A New Chapter for an Old Space
Feinmann, Inc.
The design challenge for this loft located in a manufacturing building dating to the late 19th Century was to update it with a more contemporary, modern design, renovate the kitchen and bath, and unify the space while respecting the building’s industrial origins. By rethinking existing spaces and contrasting the rough industrial shell of the building with a sleek modernist interior, the Feinmann team fulfilled the unrealized potential of the space. Working closely with the homeowners, sophisticated materials were chosen to complement a sleek design and completely change the way one experiences the space. For safety, selection of of a stainless steel post and handrail with stainless steel cable was installed preserving the open feel of the loft space and created the strong connection between loft and downstairs living space. In the kitchen, other material choices created the desired contemporary look: custom cabinetry that shows off the wood grain, panelized appliances, crisp white Corian countertops and gunmetal ceramic tiles. In the bath, a simple tub with just sheet of glass instead of a shower curtain keeps the small bath feeling as open as possible. Throughout, a concrete micro-topped floor with multi-color undertones reiterates the building’s industrial origins. Sleek horizontal lines add to the clean modern aesthetic. The team’s meticulous attention to detail from start to finish captured the homeowner’s desire for a look worthy of Dwell magazine. Photos by John Horner

Sleek and streamlined yet full of character, contemporary kitchens blend elements of both modern and traditional style. Often characterized by crisp whites and blacks livened up with pops of color and striking textural contrasts, it’s the perfect look for creating a space that’s both functional and welcoming. Whether you’re remodeling or simply in need of some fresh decor, read on to find the latest kitchen trends to incorporate in your home.

1. Minimalist Cabinets

Contemporary spaces typically start with a modern, minimalist base from which you can add in bold decorative elements. So when you’re planning out your kitchen, go with sleek cabinets that’ll give your space an uncluttered look.

2. All-White Kitchen

If you want a clean, relaxing space to cook, go with an all-white kitchen. Spice up your white cabinets and countertops with gold or brass finishes and a colorful backsplash.

3. Chic Lighting

One of the best ways to add in a touch of glam is with chic kitchen lighting. Go with pretty glass globes or geometric metal frames.

4. Fit to Entertain

If you’ve got a kitchen with an island, use it to its full potential and add in stylish bar stools for entertaining. Bright white islands look particularly smooth and clean, while quartz or marble is perfect for making a statement.

5. Bold Backsplash

A contemporary kitchen backsplash can go in a number of directions, but this is a great spot to add color and texture to an otherwise minimalist space. Guide the look of your kitchen with slab marble, glossy herringbone tiles or a bold mosaic pattern.

6. Creative Seating

If you’re picking out new kitchen chairs, the options are nearly endless. This is your chance to add in elements of other styles, so you might try midcentury wire frame chairs, industrial bar stools or elegant upholstered seating.

7. Add in Some Texture

While you search for new kitchen faucets and cabinet handles, look for finishes that will add contrasting color and texture to your space. Gold or brass look especially chic, bronze or black are more industrial and silver is perfect for a sleek, modern vibe.

8. Go All Natural

Contemporary style can also be taken in a more earthy direction with warm woods, clean lines and plenty of green houseplants. Try mixing wooden cabinets with white countertops and stainless steel appliances for a modern, yet organic mood.

9. Breakfast in Style

Create a chic breakfast nook in your kitchen with a round, white table. Or, if you’ve got a bit more space, incorporate a long, wooden kitchen table for casual dining.

10. Pick a Color and Run with It

Sometimes, the best way to make a statement is to choose one strong accent color to sprinkle throughout an otherwise neutral-toned space. A few splashes of red, dark blue or bright green could all offer welcome visual contrast without making the space feel too busy.
