Cottage Garden FusionMediterranean Landscape, Los Angeles

The front yard had no path to the sidewalk - the arch had been bricked up long ago. Along with a dead lawn it was as welcoming as a no trespassing sign. I opened up the arch and added a gently curving path to the sidewalk flanked by ethereal pink rose bushes (Cape Cod) that seem to be forever blooming. Now the front yard graciously invites you in.

It's Phormium Tenax or New Zealand Flax. I believe the type is Autropurpurea.

Growing vines on the side of the house is just inviting rats to climb up the roof and into the attic. If anyone ever had these critters in the attic, it's a nightmare and cost thousands of dollars to remove the infestation. Highly don't recommend.

It is Red Trumpet Vine or Distictis buccinatoria. It's a wonderful vine that gets covered in large red trumpet shaped flowers. It is a vigorous grower but I wouldn't call it invasive.

6. Architectural plants. These types of plants have very distinct, strong forms — the perfect foil for classic and exuberant roses. Shown: New Zealand flax and pygmy date palm
