Mid-sized elegant wooden straight staircase photo in Cleveland with painted risers

Custom Renovations

Traditional Staircase, Cleveland

These oak floors are 75 years old and, as you can see, are simply beautiful after refinishing. A solvent based urethane finish was applied over common Minwax stain.

The stain color for the floor and the stair treads are Minwax dark Walnut with some Minwax Colonial Maple mixed in. The floor is White Oak and the treads are Poplar; not by our choice, the home was built in 1940 and we only refinished the floor. The real challenge was where we installed new premium Oak unfinished planking (in the remodeled kitchen not shown) and the homeowner wanted the colors to "match". New wood does not accept stain like 75 year old wood. We had to wet the floor with water, wait 2 days for it to dry, and apply a penetrating stain (not Minwax). The water "bristles up" the wood and makes the wood act more porous; this allows more stain to absorb and hence very dark colors can be achieved.
