Where to Use the Tulip ChairDining areas are likely the most common places to use Tulip Chairs. As Saarinen sought to simplify the mass of unsightly legs, a table setting can show off the clean lines of his design whether there are two chairs or eight, as shown here.
Eero Saarinen: Born in Finland, Saarinen immigrated to the U.S. in 1923 with his architect father and textile designer mother. Key pieces include the Tulip Chair, Tulip Table, and Womb Chair.Hans Wegner: Danish. Key pieces: the Wishbone Chair and the Wing Chair.Arne Jacobsen: Danish. Key pieces: the Ant Chair, Swan Chair, Swan Sofa, AJ Lamp and Egg Chair.Of course there are many, many more, but this group is a solid sampling of the work being done at the time.
Saarinen tulip chairs surround a vintage Florence Knoll rosewood dining table with a brass base, one of Wayne and Lisa's favorite midcentury pieces. "I love the juxtaposition of a beautiful wood grain against clean white plastic," Lisa says. Andy Warhol's Brillo Box serves as a fun centerpiece.
