Dark Delight New Zealand Flax frame what will soon be a majestic Pincushion flower (Leucospermum) transplanted from the back garden (seen through the breezeway). Purple flowers and foliage echo each other and lots of open space was preserved to avoid clutter. photos by Billy Goodnick

Pathways paved with crushed stone meander through this incredible space. We planted drought tolerant perennials; nepeta, euphorbia, pittosporum tobira wheelers dwarf, dymondia and lavender. Olive trees and Oaks surround this lovely garden.

This zero lot line side area was dirt with 2 overgrown, unhealthy fruit trees before I designed the area to be both eye-pleasing and functional. The desert climate demands special consideration, so artificial turf was used as a 'doggy deposit' area, while the pavers lead from the front part of the house to the rear yard with pool, spa & BBQ, with lake and golf course views beyond. A combination of small and larger rocks require no water & create a riverbed effect & contrast against the green succulents. A bench offers quiet respite and view to the lake beyond.

photo-Caitlin Atkinson This is one of the new pathways that we were able to create where there had formally been lawn. By mounding the planting areas, we were able to introduce healthy new soil.

High shade provides a perfect environment for Alum Root in this Novato front yard. Its frothy blooms charm visitors in spring and early summer. This is a really good plant to put under California Live Oaks as they need very little summer water. Far tougher than it looks, and easy maintenance. Cathy Edger, Edger Landscape Design
