Playful with light. Damasks that have lustrous fibers can add a level of luminosity to the surrounding space. The damask on this sofa is made of a silk-linen blend featuring exotic animals. “The light plays beautifully off the silk and linen damask, greatly changing from bright and cheerful during the day to moody and sophisticated at night,” says designer Jane Ellison.

Goldenrod. This Asian-inspired space doesn't scream "autumn" — it whispers it midyawn right before dozing off for an afternoon nap (just ask the French bulldog). When the weather is cool and the leaves are falling, there are few better way to settle into a nap than with a hot cup of herbal tea or cider, with the shades drawn and all gadgets turned off (and preferably in another room).

A few pillows and a throw are enough to entice any pet to curl up for a nap.

Cool blue. Many people equate the color red with an Asian-inspired space. However, a cool muted blue also makes a great choice for this type of theme. Blue (and green) symbolizes renewal and immortality in China. What a terrific color to serve as a backdrop for blue and white porcelain ware. I also love using this "mature" shade of blue for teen boys' rooms! Color Pick: Blue Dragon 810 by Benjamin Moore
