What Houzz contributors are saying:
Soak Up Natural LightFor me, a lack of sunlight greatly contributes to my seasonal malaise. Now, spending an hour or so reading or writing on a sunny day in my new little office feels almost as invigorating as spending a summer day outside. Even on cloudy days, there’s enough light coming in the window that I can feel the beneficial effects.
Come up with a fuller, truer definition of your style. For most of us, a single word is simply not enough to encompass a personal style — it’s a little of this, a little of that. Round out your style by allowing yourself to think outside the box a bit. Just because you are mostly traditional, glam or modern doesn’t mean you can’t also be a dash rustic, vintage or cottage.
2. Be considerate about noise. As a rule, keep music and loud outdoor conversations down after 9 p.m., and try not to start up the power tools or leaf blower before 8 or 9 a.m.. If you are planning a party, try to let your neighbors know in advance — and if you enjoy throwing frequent parties, it's not a bad idea to invite your neighbors to one!If it's your neighbors who are being too noisy, your first step should be a polite knock on the door. Tell them, without sounding angry, that you understand they are having a great time, have friends visiting etc., but it's getting too loud for you, and could they please turn the music down or take the party indoors after a time you feel is appropriate? Be sure to thank them when they do what you've asked.
The windows and doors in the house exceed Energy Star standards. Solar panels on the roof help produce electricity. The home is connected to the local power grid, and the owners were the first in the area to sell power back to the power company.
