A Dining Chair Metal set in the new wing added to an Australian home by Austin Design AssociatesLike Finnish architect-designer Alvar Aalto in the 1930s, the newlyweds were fascinated by plywood’s malleability and sought a way to mold it into complex curves. They built and set up their “Kazam! machine” in their apartment’s guest bedroom. Before turning their attention to furniture, however, they contributed to the war effort by using the machine to make splints and stretchers for wounded soldiers, and fuselages, tail stabilizers and pilot seats for airplanes. That experimentation — and inspiration from the gentle bend of the potato chip — resulted in their low chairs and dining chairs with wooden or metal legs (hence the acronyms LCW, LCM, DCW and DCM).
