In order to install recessed lights we needed to lower the ceiling. I used the opportunity to drop the ceiling to create a way to hang the curtains - with a continuous HVAC convector cover the hanging curtains can be a conundrum. We used drywall reveals to create the small steps on the plane of the ceiling. You can see one of the recessed lights near the top of the image.

Thankyou for such a detailed response. I have always loved the look of drapes hanging from behind ceiling. In saying this, is the track on the ceiling or the wall and is there a difficulty installing the track and the curtain due to room to use drills etc? This is a beautifully put together room.

The wall-to-wall carpet was custom manufactured by Martin Patrick Evan. The field of the sleeping room is a cut pile, while the entry vestibule and his and her dressing rooms have a ribbed cut and loop combination.

The chairs are from Jonas Upholstery in NYC. Based upon an original design by the legendary decorating fim Jansen with the distinctive fluted and twisted legs.

Restoration Hardware pulls these paint and fabric colors off beautifully. You will find a variety of items in this palette. Another paint to consider is Sherwin Williams' Pavestone, SW7642.

The headboard and bed base were made by Jonas in NYC - they are the premiere upholstery workroom in NYC. This is not to say that other custom workrooms could not make something very similar. The headboard has an upholstered 'frame, with the majority of the headboard sitting proud (in front of) the frame.

You can easily achieve the same detail by using a drywall reveal from Fry Reglet. Essentially you are laminating additional layers of sheetrock and using the reveal to finish the edge. The reading is as if the entire ceiling is cast plaster. Lots of bang for the buck!

The floor lamp is an antique. The glass is crystal, and the base iron.

Draperies and CurtainsDraperies are a classic way to block the light in a bedroom. Blackout liners applied to the backs make them opaque, and they won’t add significantly to the cost.

Window treatments. Cotton blends easily with other fibers, making it a great choice for window treatments. A combination of cotton and polyester makes for a strong, durable fabric that resists wrinkles and has good color retention.More: 8 Modern Uses for Classically Beautiful Linen

Elements of Style added this to Draperies Lay It on the LiningOct 16, 2012

A tall window furnished from top to tail requires a lot of fabric — and the same applies to the lining. Lightweight fabric that's twice the width of the window, lined with bumph and 1-pass lining, will achieve the look you want. One-pass lining is a polyester cotton base cloth sprayed with one layer of acrylic to make a membrane; it's usually available in white, ivory and colors. Forgoing the bumph may achieve an even flatter look, but I would hesitate if the window treatment is for a bedroom.
