    11. Coordinated sets. Suites of matching furniture hark back to the days when a glimpse of ankle was considered risqué.Why break this habit? Showcase your personality by mixing together pieces that you truly love and want to live with, not just the items that a manufacturer says go together.

This dining room showcases how the predominantly modern style of the furnishings can contrast beautifully against the traditional feel of the fireplace and moldings.See the rest of this home

A Fortuny silk pendant hung above a sleek white table and metallic leather chairs combine styles and eras with success.

Be sure to include your architectural details as a layer of the collection. This architect has created a spare and beautiful dining room. He's kept original Victorian architectural details, grounded the room with a beautiful luxurious rug, added a contemporary Italian table and leather chairs, added unusual art and topped it all off with a classic Fortuny chandelier.

I try hard not to play favorites, but this has been one of the rooms on Houzz I admire most. The mix of a Victorian house with contemporary Italian furniture and the Fortuny pendant is masterful. This fixture is called the Scudo Saraceno.

The more traditional architectural elements meet contemporary art and furnishings in the dining room.

This room is gorgeous! A unique blend of modern furniture with historic architectural details. White works with it all.

This room has a sense of lightness overall - in part due to the table's wiry, spare structure. And as with the room above, its pale, neutral colors are great for the hot summer.

Throw out the rules. Chairs don't have to match, and art does not have to be so serious. This room is airy and elegant, and not the least bit oppressive.
