3. A library fit for a snake. The designers at Laura U tackled five challenges during the creation of this luxurious library. The first was building a proper snake habitat for the homeowners’ pet snake, Princess. The designers worked with Aquarium Design Group to install the proper snake equipment, such as heating lamps, ventilation and locks. Next, they worked on the other four challenges: creating privacy, integrating functional cabinets, making an elegant space and balancing colors. The final design resulted in a library where the homeowners can curl up in their aubergine space with the latest issue of Snake Fancy magazine and rest easy knowing their snake has a comfortable, safe home. Pleasingly plum. Sherwin-Williams may have named the color on these walls Chinchilla, but this library was designed around a snake named Princess, whose habitat can be seen on the right side of the photo. In addition to incorporating room for the reptile, the designers at Laura U incorporated the homeowners’ favorite color, aubergine, on the millwork and walls. Wall paint: Chinchilla 6011, Sherwin-Williams; cabinetry paint: Marooned 6020, Sherwin-WilliamsSee more of this room
As I trawled through my mental card catalog of libraries on Houzz, one of the functions of this one stood out the most. A big part of the design was providing a proper habitat for Princess the snake within the millwork. Here you can see her habitat and the grilles that allow for proper ventilation.Glass-front bookshelves keep dust off the homeowner’s beloved books and favorite objects. The homeowner’s favorite aubergine rules the color scheme. The walls are painted in Chinchilla 6011, and the cabinetry is painted in Marooned 6020, both by Sherwin-Williams.See more of this library
Challenge 1: A proper snake habitat. The biggest challenge was designing the snake habitat. “We had to learn quickly the equipment that would need to be included in the millwork design, such as proper heating lamps and space for ventilation,” says Laura Umansky, principal designer. “Also, the habitat had to be easy for the homeowners to manage — it needed to have an easy-to-open top for cleaning and for feeding the snake … it also needed locks in certain places, just in case.”Working with Aquarium Design Group, the designers received an education in the proper size and elements required for a good habitat, and were able to create a wonderful warm environment where Princess could spread out and relax. It is fully integrated into the custom shelves. A lockable grille is secured atop the snake enclosure. Overhead there is a custom-designed ventilation grille for the heat lamps; it is easy to open for access to the habitat.
