The space required for stairs varies from home to home. The height from floor to floor determines the number of risers and treads (steps). A typical home has a rise of around 7.5" per step and a run (step depth) of 11". Most homes have 13-14 treads so the footprint would be about 154" long by the width of the stairs (36" minimum). The photo above also has a landing at the bottom which would add at least another 24" inches minimum. You will also have to factor in overhead clearance..... 6'8" is the minimum.

I'm not sure exactly what type of floors they are but I do know that they scratch very easily.

Who manufactured the railing?

Dark hardwood floors flow throughout the entire house. The choice of floor had been their biggest design dilemma, Anna says. "I wanted lighter and my husband wanted a dark wood floor. He won, and as much as I hate to admit it, now that I look at the final product, he was right."An open-ended staircase leads into the kitchen, family room and foyer. Waiting by the front door is a piece the couple picked up at a local design store. The piece represents the Chinese Chongqing Dog, a powerful and muscular natural guard dog. The figure acts as protector of the house, but don't tell their dog Jackie!

Some images don't require the use of a body, but in this scene, the body adds to the empty staircase. "Not only does the subject add context conceptually, it also allows the viewer to 'feel' the space," says design photographer Cynthia Lynn.Although I wouldn't want to encounter a dark, indistinct figure while making a midnight snack run to the fridge, the subject in this contemporary home tells my eyes where to look and roots my attention to the staircase.
