What Houzz contributors are saying:
Oreo milkshake: Don't put your blender away just yet. Throw in some milk, Oreos and ice cream. While blending, take a look at this gorgeous black and white vignette. This dramatic chest of drawers has perfect symmetry, yet the art piece is not centered. It's offset by the tall buffet lamp and accessories.
Seek visual balance. Looking at your tablescape head-on, aim for a balance of visual weight from items on the left and right sides. For instance, you may have a tall, narrow lamp on the right and a short, heavy stack of books on the left. This would be unbalanced on its own, but add a sculpture on top of the stack of books or a painting hung on the wall above them, and balance is achieved.
This is the picture that inspired my makeover.
PROJECT: Give old pine dresser a makeover• Go to Ace and ask about paint/sanding/priming/etc. (my neighborhood Ace totally IS the place) — DONE• Buy dropcloth and new brushes — DONE• See if hardware (very similar to this hardware) can be freshened up or if I should buy something else fun at Anthropologie — DONE
Look closely: Did you spot the black-and-white stripe on the lamp? If you have a large area covered in pattern, such as a wall or sofa, introduce smaller instances of pattern in different scales via accessories for added interest.
Bold wallpapers, black and white, a bit of Vuitton history and a classic quilted Chanel bag are all quintessential Zoe. She would go with this room perfectly in this Chanel getup.
EW: Best advice? TF: Buy what you love and I mean what you truly Love. Not because it’s on sale, not because your friend has one, not because you heard it’s the latest trend. If you always use this rule of thumb, you won’t grow tired of your design elements and you will be much happier with your home. After all, you are the person who has to live there, so it doesn’t matter if other people like it, as long as you do. Though this entryway is a palette consisting of only two colors, the high-contrast of black and white, bold pattern found in the wallpaper, and color blocking on the dresser employs three layers of design and makes this space both dramatic and captivating.
