The bigger point is the statement that it might make. It creates a focal piece. Generally speaking shelves are cheaper than full cabinets. The door can be expensive or very affordable depending on how complex the construction is. We sell the track hardware like you need starting at $250 for the kit with free shipping: https://www.reclaimedlumberproducts.com/catalogue-of-sliding-doors-barn-door-hardware

For example, we attached a pic from a customer of "non-traditional" application where they used our flat track barn door hardware to mount a window. Isn't that cute!?

Also from a functional perspective, the door keeps dust out of the shelves and could hide clutter. You could use bigger, wider, deeper shelves than might traditional be found in a cabinet box, too, which would give you flexibility on what to store on them.

This chalkboard door in your photo is a great dual purpose idea. We have a restaurant that we supply doors, paneling, and hardware for that did the same thing on a sliding chalkboard. When it is closed it hides the entertainments system and TV; plus they get to write neat messages on the chalkboard. https://www.reclaimedlumberproducts.com/blog/designing-reclaimed-materials-restaurant

I see that this is an older post but I'd like to give some options for barn dorr hardware. Although we did not provide the door or hardware for this project I want people to know where they can find the hardware if they are in the market for it. Please feel free to visit our website and look through our selection of barn door hardware. You can visit our website at http:/www.basincustom.com to see our products and you may contact us via email at, info@basincustom.com. As far as barn doors go, we usually have a local window and door company help us and our customers find a door that fit their budget and design. Usually, they are able to order almost anything you have in mind!

Barn-door cabinets. Does your family have a cabinet-door-closing problem? If you are tired of walking into the kitchen to see every single cabinet door flung wide open, perhaps it’s time to ditch the doors. Barn-style sliding doors are the perfect compromise between traditional doors and open shelving — they let you hide the mess but leave some things open and airy. And no one will ever forget to close the doors again.

      8. Add a chalkboard. A chalkboard is a great way to infuse your kitchen with personality, whether you write inspirational quotes or grocery lists on it.

      4. Sliding chalkboard panel. Who doesn’t love a good barn door? In the kitchen, sliding barn doors allow you to choose what to hide and what to reveal — and they are perfect for small spaces, where cabinet doors swinging open can cause traffic jams. Make yours even better by incorporating a chalkboard panel on which you can write messages and grocery lists.
