Inspiration for a timeless l-shaped painted wood floor enclosed kitchen remodel in Chicago with distressed cabinets, an island, black backsplash and stainless steel appliances

KitchenTraditional Kitchen, Chicago

Happy Holidays! This kitchen was relocated in a classic, 1880's home in Evanston, IL. The island is repurposed from a Northwestern University lab table, and the countertop is culinary pewter imported from France. The wood flooring was handprinted with 'fleur de lis' accents.

It is Ben. Moore 'Light Pistachio' (2034-60) in an eggshell finish. Take care!

I've used pendants and spots together on a rail system. The one shown here (
    Brookline · More Info
) is above a peninsula with breakfast bar. I used longer cords on the pendants so they could swag to hang over the bar while the rail with spots hangs over the counter to get good task lighting into cabinets & onto the counter.
If you choose a twin circuit rail system you can control the spots and pendants separately.

I should mention here, in case you miss the full description with that image... This is a Tech Lighting monorail system with Tilt railheads and Fire pendants.

    Lauren,

I have a call into the owner to verify the color. I think I know what it is, but she selected it. I will hopefully have an answer for you by the end of the week.

    Take care,

    Nate

I haven't heard back from the owner, but I believe it is Ben. Moore 'Italian Ice Green' 2035-70 in an eggshell finish. If I hear back from the owner I will post that.

The countertop is a culinary pewter that was imported from France. I don't have the info on who made it, but it was very expensive (±$3500).

I hope that helps with your project!

    Take care,

    Nate

It is a Minwax Dark Walnut wood finish stain with a stain finish water based urethane. I hope that helps with your project.

    Take care,

    Nate

Obviously a brighter color has more punch when used like that. I don't think there would be anything wrong with a more subtle use of color behind the black. It might look more authentic. Try a smaller area before doing the entire element.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your project.

The island is a very interesting feature of the house. The home is located about four blocks from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. The island is made from a vintage lab table from Northwestern. The top is culinary pewter that was custom fabricated in France. It was delivered with a slight warp in it, and it was quite a challenge to get it flat.

The culinary pewter top is preferred by pastry chefs. I don't recall the exact amount, but I believe the countertop by itself was something like $4000.

I hope that helps. Take care.

The hutch was custom made for the owner. She directly contracted that out. I believe that is an off red stain for a base, with a flat black (probably very dark gray) stain on top, which was then distressed to reveal part of the red stain below.

I think it looks great, especially in this vintage house, which dates from the 1880's. It was the site of the first kindergarden in Evanston.

    Take care,

    Nate

The was custom made. The island actually was a science lab table from Northwestern University, located about 1/2 mile away from the house, and the countertop is culinary pewter fabricated in France.

5. Get ahead. Minimize stress on the day by cooking dishes in advance that can be frozen, or stock up on a selection of prepared morsels that will save you some effort.

Use any existing decor to your advantage. Are there bowls of fruit on the island, candles on a table or a collection of decorative serving dishes on a sideboard that will become instantly festive with the addition of holiday greens? In this kitchen, lengths of garland are tucked among canisters and cake stands sitting on a hutch, with a wreath hung above by a black and white striped ribbon.
