We had the same dilemna, and finally discovered the white macubus granite/quartzite which very closely resembles marble with its pronounced veining. Looks fantastic, and most people think it is marble.

Yes, it says above that the grout color is charcoal from Home Depot and the spacing is 1/16.

I have those in my kitchen and was dubious about them as well... They are now my favorite 'go to' storage in the entire kitchen. One layer deep makes it incredibly fast, easy to find the right spoon, peeler, etc. Definitely would recommend including in any kitchen.
  • designintervention
I have that same depth drawer under my cooktop, which is on my island. Every tool I need is immediately available. LOVE IT!!!! And just in case you're wondering, I have all drawers in my island,,,the rest are deep and wide... and I will never go back to cabinets again! So much more user friendly!!!

We just did this glossy subway tile with charcoal grout as in this picture and it looks awesome! Thank you Rebekah for your talented design eye. We remodeled our new dated house from 1960 and patterned our kitchen after your design. W/ a couple of changes to fit our smaller kitchen & I am so happy with it!!!!

What do you have to do to granite and marble to maintain them?
  • PRO

Granite doesn't need much care...Marble needs to be resealed regularly depending on use...once or twice year, but rarely do people do this.
Marble may chip, scratch and stain...so if you don't like the patina or distressed look, you're in for a rocky ride. I literally take sandpaper to mine when I chip the edges!

    Proline Range Hoods

    Hi there-

Its hard to tell what kind of range hood that is with the subway tile over it, but it does look beautiful. My guess is that it is a range hood insert under a wooden cover that was then tiled over with the subway tiles. If you are looking for a range hood I would recommend checking our hoods out here on Houzz. We have a wide selection of inserts, and wall mounted range hoods that I think could help you with your project that you are trying to achieve.

Featuring the PROV Insert · More Info

This is an image of a customer kitchen with one of our Range Hood Inserts being a good example of what you will need to look for. You could either be a DIY boss and make your own range hood cover to tile over, or purchase one. But this is the route Im thinking you are going to need to go to achieve that look.

Let me know if you have any questions about our hoods. Best of luck creating your dream kitchen!

Love the island in this kitchen too! While this is not one of our jobs, I would estimate it at being around 3' by 6'. Love how the cabinet is turned out on the end. Is it turned out on the other end as well? And does the cabinet in the center have access on both sides? More design details please!

Thanks Patricia, I'm truly flattered. The island is custom - designed to fit the needs of the client and the space it's in. The finish is a classic black laquered finish on Maple with a slight distressed finish. Check with your cabinet supplier about design options. You can also contact me directly for remote design services.

    Rebekah,
Thanks for your reply. I just might do that. One question: we live in a converted clock factory in Brooklyn with a lot of industrial details, wood beams, exposed brick and pipes, do you think a farm sink would work? Or is it too countryish? We're trying to keep the look vintage, industrial, classic with elements similar to your kitchen. We love subway tiles and marble and classic detailing. I will let you know how our "homage" turns out! Thanks

In this kitchen the stainless and black combination of hardware works because of the combination of stainless (and black) appliances (including the smaller counter appliances), the black island, the stainless finish of the stools, the nickel (?) finish of the faucet, etc. It is about balancing the mixture of finishes. Also by having both finishes it gives the kitchen a more eclectic/lived in look. It is well designed, but with layers that help the kitchen from looking brand new. Gorgeous!
  • Cynthia

Hi there, thanks! I believe my client is still really happy with the design - no complaints. The tiler did a great job! Yes, the liner is a Vent-a-Hood, but other companies make them as well. I believe we ended up with cement board over 2x4's for the backing of the tile.

Tiled On the other hand, you can really give your wooden hood a finished look by installing tile over it. This can either provide contrast to your backsplash or create a flush look, as in this traditional kitchen. You can also mix the two textures by wrapping tile just around the base of the hood and leaving the rest of the wood veneer exposed.

Keep It Clean “What people have to look out for is not necessarily staining, but etching,” Laney says. “Because anything that is acidic is going to etch the surface. That’s just the way it is.”Etching on a marble surface happens when something like lemon juice, alcohol or tomato sauce is splashed, dripped or spilled onto it. If it is not wiped up right away, the acid reacts and eats away at the calcium carbonate in the stone, creating permanent markings that look like dull, slightly darker spots or rings on the marble. How light hits the marble determines how noticeable the etching is. In some light, the scarring will not be evident at all, while certain lighting will reveal the dulled areas. Many consumers visit restaurants, ice cream parlors, bars and other public venues that use marble countertops to check out what a working marble surface looks like and to decide whether they can happily live with the reality.Using White Marble: Hot Debate Over a Classic Beauty

A little wood trim on a window is excellent for warming up a space that’s otherwise cold, such as a white kitchen or bathroom (especially if you don’t want to add window drapery). Choose a deep stain to suit a contemporary space, and leave other trim white.
