It is a "Clumping Bamboo" as opposed to a "Running Bamboo." Name: Bambusa oldhamii. Common Name: Timber Bamboo. These photos were taken right after installation. These Bamboo canes will get to 20 -30 feet.

There are two kinds of bamboo...."Running" and "Clumping". It sounds like you have a Running Bamboo. Research "running" Bamboo. The new shoots come up in April and May. It should always be planted with a Barrier. I would suggest digging a 2-3 foot channel in front of bamboo and inserting a barrier. Then try to remove runners in yard. they are typically only about 6" deep.

The fence contractor uses "Cabot" stain. I suggest looking at Cabot colors and matching..

Erica, sometimes you just have to look at it and see what feels right. There is not "set rule". These are 16" on center. (4 x 4)

An 18" long (6" x 6") iron sleeve was fabricated and set in concrete. Then Posts were inserted and bolted.

Interesting idea for a pergola. It's not so massive as a four-pole cover.
