  Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   This Chicago client was tired of living with her outdated and not-so-functional kitchen and came in for an update. The goals were to update the look of the space, enclose the washer/dryer, upgrade the appliances and the cabinets. The space is located in turn-of-the-century brownstone, so we tried to stay in keeping with that era but provide an updated and functional space. One of the primary challenges of this project was a chimney that jutted into the space. The old configuration meandered around the chimney creating some strange configurations and odd depths for the countertop. We finally decided that just flushing out the wall along the chimney instead would create a cleaner look and in the end a better functioning space. It also created the opportunity to access those new pockets of space behind the wall with appliance garages to create a unique and functional feature. The new galley kitchen has the sink on one side and the range opposite with the refrigerator on the end of the run. This very functional layout also provides large runs of counter space and plenty of storage. The washer/dryer were relocated to the opposite side of the kitchen per the client's request, and hide behind a large custom bi-fold door when not in use. A wine fridge and microwave are tucked under the counter so that the primary visual is the custom mullioned doors with antique glass and custom marble backsplash design. White cabinetry, Carrera countertops and an apron sink complete the vintage feel of the space, and polished nickel hardware and light fixtures add a little bit of bling. We love this multi-talented room. It's a perfectly functional laundry room, mud room off the garage entry with bench, cubby and hanging storage and a wonderful hobby/craft area. The warm wood table top offsets the large format tile countertops. So welcoming! Photography by Cody Wheeler

These homeowners came to us to design several areas of their home, including their mudroom and laundry. They were a growing family and needed a "landing" area as they entered their home, either from the garage but also asking for a new entrance from outside. We stole about 24 feet from their oversized garage to create a large mudroom/laundry area. Custom blue cabinets with a large "X" design on the doors of the lockers, a large farmhouse sink and a beautiful cement tile feature wall with floating shelves make this mudroom stylish and luxe. The laundry room now has a pocket door separating it from the mudroom, and houses the washer and dryer with a wood butcher block folding shelf. White tile backsplash and custom white and blue painted cabinetry takes this laundry to the next level. Both areas are stunning and have improved not only the aesthetic of the space, but also the function of what used to be an inefficient use of space.

Note handles on Laundry Board are a must due to the weight of the board when lifting into place or removing, as slippery urethane finish made it tough to hold otherwise. 2nd Note: The key to getting a support edge for the butcher-block on the Farm Sink is to have the granite installers measure to the center of the top edge of the farm sink, so that half of the top edge holds the granite, and the other half of the top edge holds the butcher block laundry board. By and large, most all granite installers will always cover the edge of any sink, so you need to specify exactly half, and explain why you need it that way. Photo taken by homeowner.

The walk-through laundry entrance from the garage to the kitchen is both stylish and functional. We created several drop zones for life's accessories and a beautiful space for our clients to complete their laundry.
